Here's one from his early 90s peak not even most of his fans would know about with Wayne Shorter.
Listen to how his tone overlaps with Shorter's soprano sax.

Late 80s through 90s Holdsworth was the peak for me. He then went through a divorce, folded up his studio (The Brewery), and never made another album. He quit cycling and according to Gary Husband was drinking more which not only negatively affected his playing but he gained a lot of weight.
He was never satisfied but I do remember him saying he was happy with Hard Hat Area. My favourite is Wardenclyffe Tower.
I love his solo on this (1997), tone included. He was using Carvins around this time in photos but I'd bet good money it was his DeLap.

I think his work with UK was phenomenal, and his more traditional jazzy stuff like Sixteen Men of Tain, but my favourite is Metal Fatigue. It just sounds so ahead of its time, whilst still sounding prog/synthwave/80s.
Such strange chord progressions and outside sound he creates, whilst still sounding pleasant to the ear and his remarkable ability to create dissonance at the right times and resolve the tension just before it becomes too much. I haven't listened to Hard Hat Area in its entirety yet so I can't compare, but I've got it on now.
I just finished Low Levels, High Stakes. It was incredible. Much more mature and jazzy sounding. And, do you notice that the fretless bass and the skill of the bass player adds so much to the overall feel of the sound, as well? I dunno, it's just a genre where the bassist adds such a greater dimension and fluidity to the sound for me - just the little nuances in the runs and stuff.
In b4 rollerball loses his chit.

Hello fellow guitar players, guitar enthusiasts and guitar aficionados. I am just like all of you, much like Bodhy. We are both fellow guitar fanatics. We love guitars and think the best of all musical instruments. They make the best sounds when you strum or blow in them, however you play them. I think some are made of wood, others are made of something besides wood.
Speaking of our fellow guitarist, did someone say Bodhy? Everyone should stop what they are doing and give him reps because he is red and it is not his fault. He is not weird, obsessed with Thai Ladyboys and has never told any lies. Please help him out. He is definitely one of us and not just coming here and feigning knowledge hoping for reps like in other cologne-based threads, because he is butthurt about being red for being an insufferable lying assh*le.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I've done literally nothing but offer my opinion on this genre of music, nor have I said anything incorrect r.e Holdsworth. There's no reason whatsoever for you to be pissed off, lol. Nor is anyone stalking you.
Might I recommend you show some maturity and not get angry for no reason, because look what you're doing: You're starting to lure those R/P fhaggots in here. And none of us want that, we want to talk guitar.

Remember you've spent years studying the most "abstruse" aspects of jazz theory so clearly you must be an elite player, let's see it.

Regardless of skill level we all love the instrument so whether you're strumming cowboy chords or blowing arpeggios over Giant Steps like Jimmy Bruno it's all welcome here.

I don't mind a subtle Eventide stereo pitch detune but I'll never understand the heavy chorus fetish on lead tones.

Dom will you just buy an Axe-FX already.
The FM3 got a new FW update that added "Dyna-cabs" which added all these extra sound shaping parameters and the chit is too much. I really need someone musical-gear nerdy like you to get intimate with this new FW and just tell me where to position these virtual mics and chit.
I really have no idea ever whether I'm getting the best tones possible from the FM3 as I just use the factory preset. I'm intimidated by all the tone shaping options.

I would tend to agree, I'm leaning towards going digital over tangible amp, but fuk me dead, you need a literal geek to navigate the niceties of the digital formats. Even all I've watched on YouTube I would still have no idea what in the literal fuk I am doing.
Just so many parameters, so many options, so many permutations and variables. And I've never typically invested in the geekier audiophilia side of guitar or music either; I've typically just been a guitar-cord-amp guy.
But after watching Leon Todd I feel digital can give you incredible tones and sound options for what is essentially a steal in price.

And if you want to step into the digital space without having to spend the thousands on an Axe or Helix unit, there are some decent sims that run via PC. I've been using TH-U by Overloud and quite like it. It isn't as feature rich as some of the dedicated hardware options but it is really good for what it does. In fact, I find myself silent practicing on it more than using my tube amp lately.

Having a look at Fractal's DynaCab now. Looks like a ripoff of Two Notes' DynIR which I am familiar with and used for years into a pair of Yamaha HS8 monitors. I've since switched to a Walrus ACS1 pedal with a very realistic Fender model and the IR block disabled running straight into a real Fender cabinet.
Mic placement makes more sense when you've done it in the real world but you still have to dick around with this stuff until it sounds good. No way around it. Every cab, speaker, and microphone is different and obviously all of it sounds different depending on the amp and guitar.
It's interesting how the stuff I was banging on about 4-5 years ago with a pair of double miked cabs in stereo is now packaged into this stuff. I had to run a couple of Two Notes devices to make it all work.
What sounds great to me for a Marshall tone is 4x12s with Celestion Greenbacks in one and Vintage 30s in the other. I had them miked pretty close on one of the mics for some proximity effect and from memory used a Neumann U87 on one and a Royer R121 on the other. To get a realistic sound with IRs I think you need to blend in a fair amount of room otherwise it sounds like spiky, sterile garbage. I used a little high cut around 6-8K to roll off some digital fizz.
