Knew this thread was gonna be the lolz when I entered it.
No excuse at all to drink and drive. But the amount of it that goes on always has me curious what percentage of people in these threads do it on a regular basis, or have done it in the past. But still come in here just to rip on OP to make themselves feel better.

Heres my story and everything that happened after it.
I had just graduated from university in April 2014 and started seeing a girl that I was way too into. Anyways it was Christmas Day and her ex bf was over at her house and I got super depressed and decided to have a pre drink and get blackout drunk. I backed my car out of my parents driveway and damaged a cable box and totalled my 20k car. I don't remember a single thing. I woke up in jail in a dark room on a phone with my lawyer asking me a bunch of questions. I then remember being fingerprinted and having my picture taken. At this point I had no idea what happened and started panicking thinking that maybe I killed someone. It was honestly the worst I've ever felt in my entire life. I then asked the police if I hurt anyone and they assured me that I didn't. To this day I get a sinking feeling in my stomache contemplating how much worse that moment could have been had the cop said "yes brad 3 people are deceased and you are being charged with vehicular homicide." Make no mistake this would essentially mean my life was over; friends, money, girls, career maybe even a family of my own one day would all be gone, not to mention innocent people dead and faced with that guilt for my entire life with nothing I could ever do to rectify the situation.
So my aunt bailed me out because my mom and step dad were too pissed off. I spent the night at her house and after much pleading my family allowed me to come home. There was an article about me (my name wasn't disclosed). The article was posted on a news sources ******** page also and people were commenting saying I should die or be in prison for life.
So I go to court and I get the disclosure with pictures of my car and my dialogue after the wreck with police where I am talking about this girl and being in love with her and chit blackout drunk. Also there is a witness report where the witness claims he saw the crash and I tried to run away down the street but he convinced me to come back (luckily I wasn't charged with fleeing the scene). Crown wanted jail before trial and Ill never forget how terrified I was when I got that disclosure document and saw that box checked stating that fact.
Anyways fast forward 4 months and I plead guilty and am sentenced to pay a 2k fine and avoid jail time.
Now I get word from the insurance company that I owe 30k in damage for the car and cable box (car was leased so insurance wasn't paying for it since I was intoxicated). Anyways here I am no job, no girl, owe 30k as well as 20k in student loans with a criminal record and no job prospects. A complete fuking loser scum bag and I literally hated myself and wanted to die everyday. This depression went on for 6 months where I laid in my basement and took anti depressants and figured it was literally over everything I ever thought I could be or become a thing of the past. There was no way I could get out of it.
I then received an opportunity to move to the city and learn from family friends who worked in finance. The problem was I was being sued 30k and only had 3 months to pay it. Anyone that is familiar with IIROC the Canadian SRO for securities regulation knows that it's basically impossible to work for a retail brokerage with any outstanding civil suits. So I had 3 months to pay 30k or this prospect of moving in with these people and getting my life on track was gone. So what I did was I took two construction jobs and worked 16 hour days. Framed houses in the day and painted houses at night. I'm lucky for this opportunity because my family is in construction. So eventually I save 20k and borrow 10k from my mom and get myself to the city.
So I get to the city and sign up for my CFA level 1 exam and work for a brokerage firm cold calling rich people making 30k cdn. I pass the CFA exam moved out of that house with my family friends. I'm 27 and realize I need to be making more than 30k. So I decide to literally cold call for jobs. I network for 6 months with random people and finally I land a job for 70k per year. I'm way behind in life right now but I'm slowly building my savings, paying the remainder of my student loan as well as my mom. I live well below my means and practice minimalism because I never want to have nothing again. Financial security is the most important thing to me. I realize I probably won't be established until early 30s but everyday I'm thankful that I even have the chance to be established because I'm a POS drunk driver, but I'm also a logical person and realize I can't change the past and can only move forward and I'll never stop moving forward.

That's basically 2.5 drinks plus one per hour since you started, so for most reasonably-paced drinking sessions, 3 or 4 is probably OK.This. The Institute said, “A study of over 3,000 fatally injured drivers in Australia showed that when marijuana was present in the blood of the driver, he or she was much more likely to be at fault for the accident. Additionally, the higher the THC concentration, the more likely the driver was to be culpable.”
The only one in that article sharing your delusions about driving performance improving while intoxicated is a criminal defense lawyer petitioning to legalize marijuana. A May 2010 study by “The Journal Of Psychoactive Drugs” found volunteer pot smokers “performed virtually the same after smoking marijuana as they did sober and/or after smoking bunk pot.”
So, there are conflicting studies, one that shows no impairment at all from THC, and one from a completely biased anti-drug foundation that shows that the maximum impairment for THC is 2x more likely to be in an accident (while the impairment for BAC=0.08 (i.e. at the legal limit) is 20x). I personally haven't smoked in years, but nonetheless, I find the "war on drugs", especially in relation to MJ, to be a complete farce and waste of money and resources.

This has nothing to do with the war on drugs. I don't give a flying toss if any these substances are legal. But if they were I'd hope that you idiots would have enough sense to know that it does not mean you should be driving around stoned or drunk out of your minds mowing down mailboxes and pedestrians.

So take the number of drinks you've had, subtract the number of hours since you started drinking, and multiply by 0.02. If you calculate less than 0.05, you're likely OK (0.08 is the limit in most states, but you don't want to be skirting the limit, either). That's basically 2.5 drinks plus one per hour since you started, so for most reasonably-paced drinking sessions, 3 or 4 is probably OK.

Three days later I find out he changed my charge from disorderly conduct to aggravated battery of a peace officer and claims I headbutted him during the arrest. No cameras, no recordings. I have about six or so witnesses who all said they would take the stand for me (once I convinced them that this was not a joke and the cop really did give me that charge). Unfortunately I was a broke college student with no job so I couldn't afford an attorney and got stuck with a public defender. He convinces me I'd be better off taking a plea bargain instead of going to trial, despite having a slew of witnesses, because I would only get probation and if I went to trial they'd give me the max of 7 years even though I had no priors. This was a little town downstate in the middle of nowhere. Everybody knew each other. I wouldn't be surprised if the judge, the DA, the PD, and the cops all got together on weekends to play golf together. It was ****ed up that for being at a party that got a little too loud I was facing 7 years in prison. So I took the plea. Three years later I violated because I couldn't find a way to get the probation meetings anymore so I went awol so they revoked it, resentenced me, and I got 4 years at 50% for good behavior, or 120 in the incarceration impact program, aka boot camp. Was a five month wait to get into the program though that I spent in county and the the intake and processing house I mentioned earlier. So I got screamed at beaten around by ex-marine and ex-army corrections officers and got out and did two years parole and finally got that **** put behind me as of October 2015. For a party that was too loud in January 2009.
Then you're given a cake walk probation and can't even manage to meet that. Keep telling yourself you're innocent and got thrown in jail because of a loud party

“The number one surprising thing to me as a public defender is how many people were actually innocent of the things they were charged with. It’s shocking. A remarkable number of people did not do what they were accused of, or what they did was completely different from what they were charged with.”
It’s easy for someone to make a criminal allegation, she said. “When we see someone charged based only on that allegation with no follow-up investigation, that’s alarming.
“Pretend this defendant is your family member. What if they got charged with a crime they didn’t commit? What if it was you? Who would you want in that courtroom? Someone who wanted to be there? Or someone who isn’t sure why they were there defending you?”
But let me guess, you as an electrical engineer are more knowledgeable on the subject of justice than somebody who spends there life actually working in the judicial system. If Im going out these days and having anything to drink at all I find a way to not have to drive after the case. I'm way to paranoid to even risk it.
I Find it interesting how the misc destroys people who get dui's but at least in my town the idea of drinking and driving is often shrugged at, I'm not saying everyone shares the same views but I mean it seems the people who look past the action of drinking and driving far exceeds those who are against it, then again I'm not talking about those who are sloshed but more about the people who down 4 beers with dinner still coherent and drive worry free. I know police officers who down 4 or 5 beers at the local brewery with friends and drive home.

I too have been guilty of drinking and driving. More than once . I think all states should have a mandatory sentencing of five days in jail for the first charge, 2nd charge another five dsys plus a $500 fine and third charge jail, fine and losing your lisence for 30 days and finally after three strikes I believe a person should lose their right to drink alchohol.
Same as when drug prohibition is ended. I believe we all have right to ingest what we want. If it be a!chohol or ******* what have you but that right needs to come with a privilege Klaus. If you abuse it...abuse it meaning you take it out of your home and your freedoms suddenly put other people at risk. I. E driving drunk or getting super high on coke or some other drug and you go out starting fights or whatever then you should !lose that privledge and no longer have the right to ingest chemicals.
Your personal rights and freedoms end at other peoiples front door

The reason you ended up in jail was 100% your own fault. That's it and that's all
