He nudged the angel.

"Funny if we both got it wrong, eh? Funny if I did the good thing and you did the bad one, eh?"

"Not really,"

Roots (1977)

Kintango:
No, the goal of war is not to kill. The goal of war is to win. By surrounding the enemy, you would force him only to fight more desperately. If you surround him on three sides and leave him an escape route, he will leave your land and there will less blood spilled on both sides. For a warrior of the Mandinka, courage is not enough.

Kunta Kinti:
But sir, won't an enemy who escapes alive fight you again?

Kintango:
It is impossible to kill an enemy. You may end a man's life, but his son becomes your new enemy. A warrior respects another warrior, even he is his enemy. A warrior kills only to protect his family, or to keep from becoming a slave. We believe not in death, but in life, and there is no object more valuable than a man's life. The way of the Mandinka is not easy, but it is best.

The Good Fight (2017- )

"We're on a necessary side. People I thought with all my heart were guilty turned out to be innocent, and people I thought were saints, they weren't. That's why you don't go on instinct. You wait, you listen, and watch. Eventually, everyone reveals themselves."

Wonderful choices, guys and gals! These would probably be mine, but even down to and past #50 they're still great!

**IN FOR THE WIN!**

A close race...this one will PLACE (I mean, really, I have a huge soft spot for this):

And three for the SHOW (OK, it's supposed to be "one for the money, two for the show..." so sue me):
"Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking" - Ray Bolger (The Scarecrow), THE WIZARD OF OZ, 1939.

Re my post in #255 (two posts up from this)...interesting that two of the three have narrations, and their styles are classical, Baroque, and march respectively. I should also specify that it's really more of a "dead heat" than win, place, show...these are known to take turns being my favorite. (Today, 24 hours later, Superman rules the roost.)

And I can't forget a whole ****-ton more which I like, such as...
The Flintstones, The Addams Family, Touched By an Angel, Charlie's Angels, Love Boat, Dick Van Dyke, Dallas, Bonanza, All In the Family (opening AND closing, as with Superman), The Jetsons, Have Gun Will Travel, Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock, Married...With Children, Racket Squad, The Lone Ranger, Gilligan's Island, The Untouchables, The Young and the Restless, Animaniacs, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The X Files, I Love Lucy, Get Smart!, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Makin' It (which became a Top 40 hit on its own), The Cosby Show, The Simpsons, Perfect Strangers (what a fun show!), The Greatest American Hero, Howdy Doody, The Twilight Zone (its variations, original series), The Jeffersons, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek original, Medical Center (obscure early 70s show), Happy Days, I Married Joan (early 1950s and my older sister REALLY loved it), Queen For a Day (another show she loved, and the strangest game show ever), Death Valley Days (with a young Ronald Reagan!), The Naked City, Mister Ed, Pokémon, Hawaii Five-O (also became a hit song on its own), The Andy Griffith Show, Dark Shadows, The Weird Al Show, The Brady Bunch, Mission: Impossible, Green Acres, American Bandstand (the instrumental jazz version - actually an earlier 1953 song from Les Elgart - before Barry Manilow's), Batman, The Golden Girls, T.H.E. Cat (a show I don't actually remember), Cheers, The Little Rascals (short films that actually pre-date TV but were shown there), The Three Stooges - likewise, Lost In Space, Bewitched, Peanuts, M*A*S*H, The Honeymooners...and I feel I've just barely started. It's no accident that there's such a cluster of stuff from the 1950s and 1960s and exploding in the 1970s. OK, the earliest were imprinted from my childhood...there's that.

Television knew how to come up with some great theme openings and closings (a handful aren't really SONGS as such) from the get-go, not to mention these were all cool shows on their own merits. (Any controversy with Bill Cosby was, at the time, not even a "What if..." yet.) I haven't even gotten STARTED on cable, Netflix, etc.-only shows...

Actually, pretty much ALL Western themes were epic...and I forgot Gunsmoke, etc.

Actually, I couldn't stand Love Boat when it was out, but I think my tastes have changed so much that I'd enjoy it now, thoroughly.

When I revisited this thread, I got entirely stuck in a full early Sunday evening of "TV-themes mood" that had me exploring all over the place for shows that I remember, how cool is that? Kudos, YouTube! (Posting this somewhat later because I forgot to do that...)

The competition for "great themes" is so brutal.

I never saw the show, but I can VERY easily imagine a great theme for it, so sounds highly plausible for me.Highly-popular shows almost always have wonderful themes except...

well, 60 minutes which doesn't really have a THEME, it's just a ticking stopwatch, and it's maybe the fifth??-oldest show currently on TV. That longevity certainly proves its popularity. What's more, it's always been on at the same time, which is most unusual for a prime time TV show.

"The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" could be ARGUED to predate 60 Minutes, though it has had that EXACT title only fairly recently (well, since Jay Leno...already a long time ago), but I'll count it! I think The Price Is Right is probably second, unless they had a hiatus in the early or middle 1960s (something tells me they did?). I must be leaving something out, but Meet The Press is the undisputed champion at now more than 70 years.

Some of the shows I posted, after all, are more narration than theme...and a great theme to me is subjective, because I'll TEND to like themes (openings) to shows that I liked. T. H. E. Cat and a couple others were ones I "discovered" while looking around.
