Asian countries have never waged real war on each other. Most of the wars were more like civil wars and were meant to unite the people and the government, much like the "united" states of America. Most people who fled South Vietnam have no clue why they fled and why there was fighting. In their minds, all they know was that China wanted to take the land and that the US helped them out.

People are conguring up very evil things about the Japanese soldiers in their minds because they don't know anything about the Japanese, other than the fact they the Japs dun goofed because they were influenced by the Germans by attacking neighboring countries for resources. People think these evil things because they know that Asians are highly skilled and highly sharp. But if that were so, senseless killing wouldn't be in the books since its the opposite of being highly intelligent. Hell, even the mafia system within Japan and China are very organized and consist of a strong honor system.

I often hear how modern Japanese harbor a resentment towards the US because of the nukes. The Rape of Nanking always made that resentment a bit of an eye-roller to me.

I hear they try to avoid talking about Nanjing in history lessons. Unit 731 was a war crime on par with Auschwitz or maybe even worse, and the masterminds were let off the hook similar to Operation Paperclip.

Well this is what I was told by a few americans that lived there for several years, but they lived there 15-25 years ago. Did you live there?

They didn't describe it as some all-consuming hatred, just a deep seeded thing that popped up when they had a negative interaction with some Japanese people. In those rare instances, it's rich to play the self-righteous role but that's clearly a problem with history lessons. I also hear that many don't have much opinion on it.

No, but I have a lot of friends and family in Japan. I see that you mentioned 15-25 years ago, and that would make a lot more sense. The younger generation (30 and under) I'm around definitely aren't resentful of the US.
I'm a full on asian american though (4th gen) and my Japanese grandfather fought for the US in WW2. His battalion was almost completely made up of japanese americans and was sent to Europe to fight.

I decided to check out some relevant vids just now and yeah, looks like alot of younger Japanese are both not taught much about WW2 or care much about what happened.

20 years ago it would have been more eminent especially with survivors and family of survivors. The incidents I was told about was American guys arguing about the military bases in Japan and it led into some comments about WW2. And I know for sure that bases can be a touchy subject in Japan.

Anyone who has studied 20th century conflict is well aware of the Japanese atrocities that were committed.

What is important (and amazing) is how the Japanese atoned for their actions immediately upon surrender and vowed to never let anything like that occur again. Germany did the same thing. Now both countries are world renowned economic powerhouses that are highly successful and respected. Amazing and to be admired.

True. It's from our heavy investment in post-war Japan. What's interesting is how Japan was fully onboard after such an intense conflict. I believe the US bases in Japan were mutually agreed upon, so maybe the post-war reforms were mutual too.

Maybe something about nuclear power just causes people to shut up and listen, maybe it's a cultural thing. I think there's few other countries who would cooperate so well in comparison.
