That is where you don't think you're a woman, but rather have a desire to wear women's clothes due to the feeling of power/thrill it gives. The reason that's a diagnosis is because most patients don't understand why they do this.

I read a really good and large study on the topic and the general finding was that all transvestite males had abusive relationships with their mother. All reported at one time or another, mutilating their mother's underwear, meaning ripping it apart, etc.

Sometimes, instead of facing hard realities, people will blame objects around them or give them power and personality. So, transvestites likely hate their mother, but can't bring themselves to admit it, and then associate power, fear, anger, etc with female clothes. So, putting them on give some of the power of their evil mother.

Homosexuals and trans people used to have the same explanation. It was called Identification with the Enemy and it's where you want to be like the type of person who abused you, but at the same time you hate them.

An normal example is, you got beat up by another kid, didn't like it, yet you wanted to learn to fight and beat people up.

Why would you do that instead of want to be a pacifist? It's because you hated getting beat up but yet on another level admired the power.

That's why gay people and trans tend to be stereotypical type representations of the opposite sex.

For instance, at one point in my life I had very long hair. It is unlikely that a female to male trans would decide to grow their hair super long, because that's not "manly" but it was in fact manly because I am a man and had super long hair.

They want to be stereotypes of the opposite sex because they have fascination/hatred or the stereotypes and want to be a stereotype for power.
