I remember having to do a "debate" once in college (we were given a topic with opponents and had to defend whatever side the prof gave us of the debate, what we actually thought was irrelevant she said, srs).
I was tasked with debating that cigarette smoking should be banned on campus rather than allowing these small outdoor designated smoke break areas that had been established. I felt like that an outright smoking ban was overkill, but that's what I was told to debate for, so I did. The opposition just kept screeching "but muh tradition! but muh smokies to get me through school stress (oh, the humanity!)!!!. I.e., awful, purely emotionally based arguements for keeping smoking on campus.
Then they came in with the "muh genetics" bullchit. I responded by explaining how I had smoked for 2 years and quit, so I didn't consider that an excuse. Then some asssaclown from the student audience blurts out "Well.... uh.. I've smoked for 16 years, and you don't know what that's like, so you can't comment on it!!!!". Then all the smokercels chimed in an howled in agreeement, effectively making me debate the entire class instead of the debate team me and my team had just subdued.
Then I explained how my father smoked for 40 years and quit cold turkey before I ever touched a cig, and asked Big Balls "I've smoked for 16 whole years, so you couldn't possibly understand!" McGee his thoughts on getting trumped like that, to which he responded "See you just proved my point, genetics made quitting easy for you and your family!". Then I asked him how he felt about my father's dad who smoke and drank like a mo'fo for 60 years until it finally killed him in old age, and asked if he had any further lectures for me about how genetics just made addition easy for me. Whole class just went silent at that point lol

As I explained to the other poster, the human body was at a plateau of development about 40,000 years ago. Alcohol is an invention and poison developed only a few thousand years ago and that is no time to develop "genes" around the substance.
Addiction is driven by your belief system and what you think the substance is going to do for you. Some drugs like opiates are physically additing but even then, your belief system will make to stop the addiction or keep it going depending on what you think about opiates.
There's no such thing as a family genetic addiction.
You grow up around some drug your parents use, it looks good, seems like an answer, and then when you grow up, you repeat the same behaviors as your parents. We do the same thing about many things in life. You learned ABC from watching your parents and now you do ABC.
The reason this remains an issue is because a lot of addicts are narcissists and immature, so if you say they are doing something wrong, they will get angry and do it more.
Also, the substance abuse industry wants to sell products. So, only "genetic freaks" get addicted and that makes consumers feel better. Meanwhile, they are selling people a dreams with alcohol commercials, bottling, etc.

I know a lot about health and only a few years ago after a friend of mine died from dementia, he was super strong, did I begin to research medication and alcohol more completely.
He was always very strong and athletic and was 20 years older than me. He could lift really heavy and didn't even go to the gym a lot. He could get fat and lose it in no time. He was also very intelligent and quick quitted.
Anyway, one day his wife calls me and he's in a NURSING HOME because he had some kind of Lewy Body Dementia.
I thought it was fake, that's how shocked I was.
Anyway, he had a weird childhood and took psych meds he didn't need for a long time. I researched his psych meds because I know such meds can do brain damage. He would drink at times and I looked into alcohol more because I know that causes brain damage.
Anyway, I learned his psych meds WILL cause brain damage no matter what.
I learned that alcohol causes over 200 chronic illnesses.
The public needs to know these things because probably hundreds of millions of Americas drink all of the time and don't think about these issues.
Meanwhile in the media they are always wondered about the "mystery of Alzheimers" and so on. Well, how about it's from drinking poison for recreation for decades of your life?

I've never witnessed any other relatives actively doing it (though my dad's youngest brother drank himself to death, and was a great and successful guy). Again, none of that is an excuse to not get sober.
With that said - you don't seem to know what you're talking about, but want to insist that you do, and again...are just here to jerk yourself off. A year sober isn't that long to have such a know it all attitude, so while I'm not at all wishing it upon you, your hubris may lead you back...

The other poster is saying substance abuse is not genetic.
You are insulting him and then telling a story about how your dad DECIDED to stop drinking.
You can't decide to stop having cancer or being blind. You can only decide to stop a behavior you chose to do and have control of.
