Does anyone feel like a lot more people are becoming depressed nowadays?

Not to downplay the effects depression has on people, I think it's a serious issue. I've just been noticing that so many more people are depressed nowadays than even 5 years ago. Even on the misc daily I see threads about users feeling suicidal. Dafuq is going on here?

My only theories is:

1. Low testosterone plague, levels have dropped by like 30% average (low test linked to mood issues).

2. Internet culture is ****ing people over. People just sit at home all day, not connecting genuinely and rotting away as humans need social connection like we need water.

3. People are more vocal about their depression, maybe **** was just as bad a 100 years ago but we didn't hear about it. I somehow doubt this though as I'm noticing there's far less happy people than even in my parents generation.

Probably number 3 OP
Plus the fact that with the current criteria to diagnose depression is chit. People get labeled as depressed and take medication for absolutely no reasons.

" The biggest mistake in DSM III was introducing the very broad and heterogeneous category 'Major Depressive Disorder'. This combined under one rubric what had previously been two separate and quite different presentations: 1) severe, melancholic, delusional, or incapacitating depressions, and 2) reactive to stress, mild, and often transient depressions. The result is that many people get the label Major Depressive Disorder, even though their presentation isn't really 'Major', isn't really 'Depressive', isn't really 'Disorder'. Mild sadness in reaction to stress and disappointment is lumped together with the most severe suffering known to man."

People are trying to burn their dopamine all the time all at once and think that there's gonna be no mental blowback. Save your dopamine for the weekend. Improve the efficiency of your labor during the week, then when you feel like you deserve it, go nuts.

People are drinking and doing wild chit everyday, what are they celebrating? What did the earn? And it's not even high elite guys, it's people wanting to show off as if they were. A bunch of borderline poor people spending money that they don't have and then partying like Roman Emperors despite achieving nothing. The hollowed and more embarrassing form of hedonism comes from the middle class.

Yes, carpe diem, but only when you know you are moving forward, even if it's a tiny bit.

Humans are social animals.
But our whole society wants to outdo one another

brb bigger house than you
brb newer, shinier car
brb 9/10 hbb on my arm

This pushes people further apart. You lose the sense of "community"

There are several countries that still exhibit tight knit communities and people that live in the moment. Even though these countries are "poor" the people are on average happier than their western counterparts.

I feel like it's technology tbh. Everyone's so absorbed into technology that they forget the beauty that can actually be experienced in life. For some people its almost like it's irreversible. They become so used to technology that they go outside and do chit but it doesn't appeal to them becauseball they know is social media, texting, etc.

Idk if that makes sense but meh.
There and back again twice, a deep red's tale.

Normally I come into these threads and write a wall of text for why people are so depressed these days, but this sums that up concisely.

Only thing I'd add is a sense of isolation. Humans are social creatures. Living in such high population densities (as opposed to close knit, smaller communities), plus being focused on social media/smartphones, plus a competitive culture creates a huge disconnect. And that's not including guys who have trouble connecting with other guys (especially ones who grew up without a strong father figure) and guys who have TFW no gf because the dating marketplace is more competitive than ever.

EDIT: You can also throw in poor diets and a sedentary lifestyle as well. I don't think they have as much of an impact the other things, but they certainly contribute.

Same here I genuinely don't want a kid because I fear he'll experience the same ****ty life I have and all the crap and misery I've had to go through. Just makes me wonder if it was worth getting into to begin with and I want to save em from that.

And I agree alot of it boils down to us all being in our own bubble now because of technology driving us farther apart then we ever have been in history. People use to find happiness in making connections with people on a daily basis and we're starting to lose that.

I can see technology playing a role

One of Maslow's theories is the fact that we need a sense of belonging..technology only gives us a superficial sense of belonging but not a physical thus making us feel half of intimacy that is required to stimulate the requirement for us to grow as a human

Causing us to feel half of the trait that is required and we feel the gap but it is never fulfilled...but there is a lot more aspects beyond it that will result in depression

Yeah, the diet is terrible, not like it used to be.
Dairy products are exploded with Estrogen.
Testosterone isn't what it used to be.
Internet, gadgets, TVs are ruining our social skills.

No social skills + low testosterone = depression.
Low testosterone + great social skills = Can come out of depression.
But it's rare to have good social skills in our generation when everybody is busy snapchatting shyt.

People arent more depressed.

What happens is they see a free pass to victimhood. Just have to say they are depressed and get an outpouring of sympathy. no need for proof or an actual disability or symptoms other then saying you are sad.

people love to be victims. it relieves them of taking responsibility for their actions.

entire industries are built around this and if people are involved in it then they get the benefits of that industry.

Along with technology is a self entitlement attitude. Back before people were always working for someone else i.e. wife, kids, parents or the community as a whole. Now they only work for themselves and it's never enough. There is always someone that has more, bigger better stuff than them so they are always a failure.

But that's just my opinion. I'm happy and have always been so so don't really understand depression. I know depression is a chemical imbalance but there also those that just have a pissy attitude. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the kids and I are healthy. Its a great day.

We here in India know all about the problems the western people have brought upon themselves. There is only one way, life and truth. The basics of life and the basic instructions. I believe with all my heart and soul in Jesus. I love all the people on earth as my brothers and sisters. Wake up brothers and sisters in the west, turn away from sin. Praying for you.

Sincerely,

The cookie cutter lifestyle american dream of going to college, experiencing college lifestyle then graduating to indebt yourself further with mortgages, cars and credit card debt in a dismal market.

Then you throw in social media where you see both the undesirables posting things that make them seem happy, and the lucky ones who landed a nice job in their career industry taking vacations and weekend getaways every month.

Go figure. This "depression" is nothing more than unachieved goals (or no goals were ever even set) being compared to the lucky ones who made it. We all compare our lives to our peers to gauge our success, but people spend too much time keeping tabs on their peers making sure that they themselves are on track and forget to set up their personal goals.

Personal goals and hard work keeps depression at bay, I think. You can call it a distraction, but that's what life is all about; distracting yourself to stay busy and reach your goals while having fun in-between.

Edit: well that's my opinion, anyway. I felt so beaten and down when I was comparing myself to others. Then I set my goals and went into overdrive. Ive been so distracted with my goals that I don't compare myself to others, anymore. I have a co-worker who is in the same position as me, but he's still after the material cookie cutter things but still warns me to finish my degree. I told him that there are people out there with no degrees making money. There are people with degrees making no money. There are also people working on their degrees making zero connections with zero plans to get themselves in their desired field of study.

Depression is easily cured with planning. Fuk, even working out kills depression through fatigue, rest and the thought of recreating yourself.

Its our fault. We idolize people we will never meet and dont give enuff love to those that share everyday with us, we try to show off to others someone we are not, we buy stuff we dont need in order to get validation from others, the tecnology gives us the false sense that we are connected, but the truth is never in history, we as humans had so many problems with socilization, to show ou loved we care about them . Theres so much wrong with this world we live in. The times pass by and its not changing, unless you change it for yourself. Be the change you want to see in your life

it's simple, people are becoming less blue pill as we learn more about our world and ourselves. we realize our lives are pointless and driven by a futile sense of self interest. we work meaningless jobs day in and day out with people we pretend to care about. the idea of the average person being happy is absolutely laughable, most just cope but the number that get sick of coping and admit depression is growing.
And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds, for the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his gods?
