He was heavily connected to the Nation if Islam, Malcolm X and violent radicals. Not to mention he dodged the military during a time of war.

Given, he seems like he treated fans well... But they are talking like George Washinton just died on every TV station.

He did a lot of things that inspired people. In sports, political culture, and social culture.

Yeah treating people like they matter more than others is dumb, but when you do great things that emotionally and psychologically touches people, people can't help but to show their respects and feel a sense of sorrow.

Its the usual shyt mostly. Some famous person dies, all kinds of people who didnt know them in person and probably rarely ever even thought about them, and they are all suddenly in mourning, and were huge fans, or whatever.

I really liked Prince and it completely blew my mind all the attention, sudden fans, and the nonstop 24/7 CNN (and Im sure other news channels) coverage his death got, for example.

Patrick Swayze was another one, went out like a boss too. Dont think so much attention was given to his death though (of course it was known that its was coming).

Okay, so take away that line of the quote....you still have an issue with him. If he's opposed to going to war, as an American, he has a right to voice that and stand on it. You can't just draft someone and expect them to be all honky dory about WAR, not recess, WAR, and get on the bus like, "Ready for boot camp.....where's my rifle?". Really?

He wasn't perfect, far from it like any man he had his vices and flaws.

But he was a cultural icon. You say he dodged the military, well while true you need to know the context of what he did and why he did it, to understand how that one act made him more than just a boxer. He didn't believe it was a just war at a time when this was not the opinion of the majority, as he said "I got nothing against no Vietcong, no vietnamese called me N*gger". For standing up for his beliefs he was stripped of his title, stripped of his living, stripped of his boxing prime. He could have given in at anytime and enlisted but he stuck to his beliefs despite the financial hardship and hate from the public. But as the Vietnam war dragged on and peoples view of the war changed Ali became a focal figure in the anti-war and civil rights movement.

You can question the man, his standing as a boxer, but you can't question the significance he had during a very important time in American history. Ali was an icon, he transcended his sport at a time when boxing wasn't the niche sport it is now, boxing back then was huge and he was the biggest star in boxing, hell he was boxing to many and as I said he became more than just a boxer for his outspoken expression of his beliefs and ideals.
