I also understand race issues were much different then, but the Malcom X ideology is akin to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson with violence. It does nothing but destroy race relations and invoke racism.
holy crap. How can you be so stupid? First of all, the war was pointless. We were doing inhumane things in Vietnam and at no point were we defending our liberties back home. Ali had every right to protest the war and to refuse being drafted into the military. Also, just lol at using Malcom X as a comparison to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Black were oppressed in the 50s/60s and that's a fact. So why would Ali want to risk his life in a pointless war for a country where he was treated like a 2nd class citizen? The Vietnamese people would probably treat him better than the general white population treated him.

Yeah seriously so stupid. Only a TOOL would go fight for their country when being drafted. Add to the fact that you're black and the country treats u like crap because of that then really why would u go?

It's the equivalence of someone you're with that treats u terribly but asks u to do a favor so huge that u are very likely to die..anyone who respects them self would say no

Let's be honest, you don't like him because he's a Muslim. Vietnam war was a ****ing joke, whoever participated in it wasted there time. Of course many weren't aware or didn't have the choice to not participate. Muhammed Ali was more of an American than you will ever be.

The ones who did fight got redlined from nice neighborhoods and had to choose section 8 or rent real high. Then had drugs introduced into the neighborhoods. Which created our fukked up communities of today..

I didn't like him for those reasons and more. His daughter doesn't like him.

In addition, I don't really like boxers that much. He used to beat people up and love it, talking crap, it gave him brain damage then he could barely talk or move well. Seems like poetic justice.

I don't know if you realize OP, but Ali was a part of the majority when it came to (un)popular opinions on Vietnam. No matter if you were black or white. Obviously it was a different time for African Americans at that time, it was at the height of the civil rights movement and he was no perfect man. He never killed anyone nor hurt anyone (besides the unfortunate ones that stepped into the ring with him).

In his later life, Ali used his fame and status to support and establish more than a dozen charities, organization and causes that promoted everything from peaceful coexistence between all race and religion to the advancement of medicine in the search for a cure for Parkinsons and many other debilitating illnesses.

You say he dodged the military, well while true you need to know the context of what he did and why he did it, to understand how that one act made him more than just a boxer. He didn't believe it was a just war at a time when this was not the opinion of the majority, as he said "I got nothing against no Vietcong, no vietnamese called me N*gger". For standing up for his beliefs he was stripped of his title, stripped of his living, stripped of his boxing prime. He could have given in at anytime and enlisted but he stuck to his beliefs despite the financial hardship and hate from the public. But as the Vietnam war dragged on and peoples view of the war changed Ali became a focal figure in the anti-war and civil rights movement.

You can question the man, his standing as a boxer, but you can't question the significance he had during a very important time in American history. Ali was an icon, he transcended his sport at a time when boxing wasn't the niche sport it is now, boxing back then was huge and he was the biggest star in boxing, hell he was boxing to many and as I said he became more than just a boxer for his outspoken expression of his beliefs and ideals.
It wasn't about the rights and wrongs of the Vietnam war, other blacks that did go to war hated him as they thought he was betraying them.

For much of his life he was racist, segregationist and misogynistic. Been listening to a few people on the radio today, who knew him, including his biographer Thomas Hause who interviewed hundreds of his friends. They all say the exact same things about him as a person; charismatic and controversial, but often contradictory and on the wrong side of the argument.

A great man definitely, but far, far from perfect

lol @ saying dodging the draft is a bad thing.

That is like calling a German a bad person for fleeing Germany instead of fighting for the Nazi's.

Anyone with half a brain, soul and heart would have dodged going to Vietnam.

*******
“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.”
There is only one Hell: the one we live in now.

Lmao as usual got the same old people blowing up social media going on about how sad they are... RIP.. you will be missed etc.. most of them women..

Yet i reckon 90% of them never watched a boxing match.. let alone Ali.. most probably didn't even know he was still alive till they found out he died today.

Fukk this fakeness.. i honestly couldn't give a **** about anyone except my close family.

Your an absolute pussy if Paul Walker.. Amy whitehouse.. Ali dying ruins your day
