I turned down a job up in yellowknife where I would have been taking home around $15k a month because the shift was too long and I didnt think the money vs not having a decent work/life balance was really worth it.

Why not do both? I use to install windows and doors for an engineer who is now a contractor with his own window/door business who installs his own windows and doors at 60 year old and he is making bank...yes he does stress going to college to me but he also loves doing the physical work himself...

I'm not speaking from direct experience, but I know that my dad did various trades all his life. He was pretty good about taking care of himself (for the most part), but literally all of his friends are cripples for one reason or another (all blue-collar job related). They're all in their mid 50's to early 60's as is my dad. He pushed me to work hard in school and go to college because he didn't want me to live the blue-collar life he did. So if that makes me a pussy, then I guess i'm a pussy.

BTW I go to the gym consistently and lift in the 1-5 rep range so I am doing heavy lifting but its on my own accord, not because its a part of my job description.

Also, I know how to do handy work around a house. My dad would flip houses as a side job and when I tagged along with him he taught me things along the way. Worst case scenario, I'll just go on youtube and look up how to install/fix something.

I fitted solar panels from age 17-20 brah, commercial and domestic. Sick job and would go back tomorrow if the government hadn't cut the feed in tariff thus killing the industry.

Basic manual labor =/= trades.

Most trades require technical experience and a modicum of intelligence. Not like carrying sacks of wheat around or something.

More importantly, most trades and labor jobs are unionized in the US, so it is actually illegal to fire somebody while they are injured/sick.

okay so I hear every miscer bragging about their "STEM" degree, I looked it up and saw it is just an acronym for "Science, technology, engineering, mathematics".... Then I thought, how the hell can you lump all those things into one umbrella term?

The reason why is because having a degree in a science/engineering/whatever doesn't mean you know EVERYTHING... This is because our understanding of the universe is expanding by the years and is STILL expanding. So it's physically impossible to know everything. Even then, we already have so many volumes of knowledge available now that it takes one a lifetime just to basically grasp one area of expertise... Do you want to know why this is the case? Okay let me explain something about the sciences, what you read in a textbook is usually the simplified baby version of what a Professor has written down to try and explain it to you... For instance, "crossing over" within recombination isn't just entire chromosome chunks swapping, but involves polarity shifting from strand invasion causing a holiday junction... But if we tried to explain that in a remedial class your grades would be lower than they are now. We want you to be able to understand base concepts before we overload you with information.

Another thing which scares me is that many of you seem to think that going into the sciences/technology = prosperity... To which I am going to shatter your delusions right now and will tell you this, NO career choice will guarantee success... The sciences are just like every other career choice, if you don't network or do internships to put on your resume your phucked... The only advantage you have is that more often than not you get payed to intern, unless your working under one of your professors.

Furthermore, if you're only going into the sciences for just employment, I would strongly discourage it... Seeing as you're probably not really interested in the sciences, and if you're not interested in them then you're not going to be good at them... And if you're not good at them, you're probably not going to get employment within them. That's just how it is when it comes to jobs that are important, not only do you have to have the networks, connections, experience, but also the TECHNICAL COMPETENCE to do it. If you don't have talent within the sciences I would suggest doing something else with your time, like banking and accounting if your sole motivation for going to college is money.

I have utmost respect for most tradies, many of them are bloody hard workers. I did labouring/landscaping work in my first year of uni and it was tough. Glad I just sit in a chair now. Let's not bag our tradie/STEM brahs, but female jobs like journalism.
