4 in 10 American women are now classified as obese

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2...obese-epidemic
More than four in 10 American women are now classified as obese in an alarming new milestone for the nation.

Obesity rates for men and women in the US had been roughly the same for about a decade. But in recent years, women have surged ahead and now just over 40% of women are obese, compared to 35% of men.

The percentages were reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in two articles published online on Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association. The numbers are based on a small government survey that is considered the best measure of the nation’s obesity problem.

Though it is not altogether surprising to health researchers because the nation has long been growing more obese, it is “scary” that the statistic has reached 40% for women, said Dana Hunnes, a dietitian who sees obese patients at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“It’s a really alarming figure, and it’s alarming that it’s continuing to go up despite government calls to action on weight loss and healthy eating,” she said.

Why the problem is getting worse for women faster than for men remains somewhat of a mystery to health researchers. “I don’t know if anyone truly knows for sure,” Hunnes said. Experts say there are a range of possible explanations, including that many women are satisfied with a larger body size.

The rate of obesity in women is also higher than in men across the world, although far lower overall than in the US. According to the World Health Organization, 15% of women worldwide and 11% of men are obese.

Our gigantic problem with portions: why are we all eating too much?

Obesity, which means not merely overweight, but seriously overweight, is considered one of the nation’s leading public health problems because it can trigger diabetes and lead to heart disease and other serious health problems. Until the early 1980s, only about one in six adults were obese.

The problem is not increasing as dramatically as it was, but the new numbers show it is clearly not improving, said Dr Felipe Lobelo, an Emory University researcher who focuses on obesity and physical activity.

Researchers looked at obesity rates among different age groups and along racial lines and found wide disparities, mainly ones that have persisted for years.

Obesity continues to be most common among black women. About 57% of black women are obese. In contrast, about 47% of Hispanic women, 38% of white women, and 12% of Asian women are obese.

Among men of different races, obesity rates cluster much closer together — at 35 to 38% for blacks, Hispanics, and whites.

But for Men I would say yea BMI isn't accurate at all for some men, especially if they lift. So that 35% of men is probably actually closer to 25%

BMI for women isnt as bad as men due to their lower lbm and the much lower % that lift weights.

That said...BMI does suck ass as a measurement.

i believe 1/10 are morbidly obese as well which is also determined by BMI however morbid (or stage 3) obesity is no doubt a dusgustingly high level of weight.

Agree with this. BMI for women isnt as bad as men due to their lower lbm and the much lower % that lift weights.

That said...BMI does suck ass as a measurement.
BMI only sucks when used in the wrong context. It's been shown to be a very effective measure of populations but for smaller groups and individuals it is pretty poor. Especially at the individual level where it can be clearly shown that individuals' healthy weights vary dramatically even at the same height. To be fair 5,455 adults seems a slightly low sample size but should be reasonable for a high level of confidence (assuming they have a decent geographical and social spread).

The article can be found here:https://jama.jamanetwork.com/article...icleid=2526613
In this issue of JAMA, Flegal and colleagues1 and Ogden and colleagues2 report updated findings related to the prevalence of obesity in the United States. The news is neither good nor surprising. Using 2013-2014 data from 5455 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 35.0% of men were obese (BMI ≥30) and 5.5% were morbidly obese (BMI≥40); among adult women, 40.4% were obese and 9.9% were morbidly obese. These prevalences are unchanged since 2005 among men and represent a slight increase in obesity among women. The data for children are similar. Based on 7017 youth 2 to 19 years old in 2011-2014, the prevalence of obesity was 17.0% and extreme obesity 5.8%. Obesity rates have decreased in children aged 2 to 5 years since 2003-2004, stabilized in 6- to 11-year-olds since 2007-2008, but steadily increased among adolescents since 1988.
BMI or not it's crazy how many fat people are in the U.S.

Being in good shape puts you in the minority here. Most girls that are skinny have eating disorders. Extremely rare to find a girl that eats healthy, exercises, and lives an active lifestyle. Sad!

At first I was really excited that the US would be getting more "real" women with "curves and all". A jump from 33% real women to 40% real women was a welcomed increase.

Then I saw they were just using BMI and the sad truth is that most of those labelled obese under BMI are just extremely muscular or big boned. The rest just have a thyroid issue.

Shut up you ignoramous. 66% of the country has a thyroid issue. Its not their fault, so stop fat shaming.

Not in the more active states. I workout in the morning, see plenty of women working out.

When I worked out at night, plenty there as well.

On my drive to work, I see mainly women jogging around in the burbs I drive through. When I go hiking, women all over.

Then again, I live in one of the most fit states in America so my view is probably skewed/biased, leading to my initial statement. Go to a diff state.

I visited Houston TX and my god, there were sooo many fat fuks around. I ordered a sweet tea at a BBQ joint and she brought out a fukkin pitcher of sweet tea, just for me. Every other person who had ordered sweet tea also got an individual pitcher along with their already XXXXL cup.

I suppose when you live in a boring area, all there is to do is, eat, sleep, fuk, party.

Fewer than 0.001% of people with a high BMI are jacked bodybuilders, they are a statistical blip.

On an individual level, BMI doesn't mean ****, but with a large sample of people, it is very valid.

Yep, Texas is amazingly fat. It boggles the mind. Even California has high obesity, but in West LA people tend to keep in shape so you don't see it as much.

But yeah, whenever I visit any state apart from Colorado, I am usually in a state of shock for a while.

Makes you wonder whether the civilizational bargain (technological progress for human health) was at all worth it.
