Remember this is a pretty nice resort in a lake with fountains. It's reasonable to think the no swimming sign can be interpreted as we don't want a bunch of people in our nice lake rather than no swimming for your own safety.

Granted even with that perspective they were technically breaking the rules, as the kid had his feet in the water, but you can see how something like this can be misinterpreted, especially from someone from Nebraska.



Also lol at anyone who thinks the two year old won't be up and out during vacation at 9:30 on movie night. I know most of you don't leave your parents homes, let alone go on vacations, but that's not even sort of a big deal or bad parenting

It's Florida. There are alligators in it.

This wasn't a swimming pool. Alligators find bodies of fresh water in live in them, then they eat things that come to the edge, the way nature intended. Parents were not thinking.

Alligators are the real-life version of the Misc meme about pitbulls: once they lock their jaws, it's all over.

Almost no power to open their jaws. Keeping their jaw closed is how alligator wrestlers do it. Once they've got their jaws on you, forget it. Their skin is essentially armor. You're not likely going to hurt them and you're not going to overpower them, and you're certainly not likely going to convince them to let go of food. Dad's only chance might have been to claw at the eyeballs and try to blind it to freak it out and confuse it, but I doubt the baby would come out of it without life-threatening injuries either way.

On my next trip to shark infested waters I'm going to go for a swim, if there aren't any signs that indicate specifically that I would be in danger of being attacked, or killed by the sharks, then surely it's A-ok! Also there are no signs on that wasp nest I saw at the park the other day, think I'll stick my hand in there and shake it around a bit hehe.

Not every place is paved over and fenced off. I can understand being naive as a visitor, but if it's clearly marked "don't do that", you don't really need graphical illustrations of why. Just don't do it.

Those jaws close with thousands of pounds of force, you couldnt deadlift them open on land forgetting the fact they were in water, and their skin is leather thick like armor, the punches are gonna roll off it. keep in mind the kid is probably drowning during this whole struggle

This isn't Toronto. It was posted not to swim, and probably for this very reason.

You're delusional if you believe resort owners can keep alligators out of the water. There is approximately one alligator for every ten people in the state and they travel freely between lakes. There isn't some alligator death squad touring the state by chopper to stop them, and the lagoon is huge, it's obviously unrealistic to expect the entire shore to be controlled at all times.

They have swimming pools inside the resort complex that are monitored and controlled. The lagoon is just to look at, not to get eaten in.

Then simply restrict access to the area with a gate. Have very clear signage about the dangers of natural predators and by crossing this gate you acknowledge these dangers.

Resort owner is responsible for this.
