Yeah, it seemed to be kinda clear cut at first depending on the situation but now if they knew they had an issue then they should have had gator signs posted hands down.

Unless the gator is starving, they bury their pray until a later point. Father is 100% at fault. There was a sign that said to stay away from the water. Gators and crocs pop up just about anywhere.

Fuark that is brutal. Poor kid and I can't imagine how the parents feel.

As a native Floridian and someone who has been to Disney/Orlando multiple times, I can tell you that Disney is basically built on a swamp. They own hundreds of acres that is basically just thick forest and swamp land so it really isn't surprising that there are gators in and around their hotels.

To those who haven't been here, you basically just assume that in any fresh water there is at least one gator. And 9/10 times there is one.

My mom lives in south Florida. She always says expect them anywhere there's water and if a sign says to stay away, you stay away.

It's a man-made lake. They do their best to remove "nuisance" alligators, but it's a body of fresh water in FL...there will always be some gators in it.

As I said earlier in this thread, that argument basically means "there can be no freshwater beaches in Florida".

There is about one alligator for every twelve people in Florida. They're in every body of water and freely travel between them every day. There's just no assurance that any body of water will be alligator-free at any given time, and you can guarantee that a larger one will host several.

I know its man made, if it was there naturally I couldn't really say anything.
Why on earth would you put a man made lake in a family tourist resort, build a beach around it, put welcoming sun loungers on it, in an area where gators are apparently guaranteed to then come live in it, and then not warn said tourists that the lovely looking beach you might feel like sunbathing or letting your kids play on is actually gator haven.

It sounds like it's been a disaster waiting to happen for a long time.

Add to that that apparently they haven't really been trying to remove alligators that have been a nuisance to patrons previously, and still didn't warn people about them until it was way too late.

No swimming because the water gets deep. Thats what the signs say. The signs did not say "danger stay out of the water". The boy wasn't swimming. He was walking and playing in the shallow water.

That's precisely the point.

You were told not to swim. It doesn't need to spell out the reasons why so that you can a decision about whether or not you want to ignore it.

It might be because you will be electrocuted, drowned by an anaconda, eaten by an alligator, sucked into a drainage pipe, maimed by speedboat props, get your foot caught on something in the lakebed. It might just be because there's no lifeguard and they don't want the liability. It's irrelevant. It isn't your lake. You have no right to be in it. You are an unauthorized user and a trespasser. DO NOT SWIM WHERE IT SAYS "NO SWIMMING".
