I know a lot of Argentinian people and to them Maradona will always be the best until messi wins them a WC.

In 2014 I was in NYC and watched the finals in a Latin bar full of Argentina fans and they destroyed messi for not showing up. Saw some guys ripping his shirt too.

If that cuck Higuain were to actually clutch up in the WC final, and two of the Copa America finals and convert those chances (1 being a PK) we would not be here questioning the likes of Messi. It's football and things happen that are sometimes out of Messi's control. Can you imagine if he the WC and two Copa America's were won, he would have such an immense resume then that calling him anything other than the greatest would be wrong. For anyone watching that game there was little to nothing Messi could do that game because he was absolutely swarmed with 3-4 players immediately, he had to rely on others during that game and they just did not show up.

Ronaldo proved his dominance in Portugese league, EPL and Laliga then in Figo era Portugal against big teams. He wrecked everyone in his prime and not to mention is currently the second highest goal scorer in Laliga and is catching up. He joined laliga on the late 2009 and Messi 4 years earlier which is a proof that Ronaldo is better.

Messi has a world class squad in Argentina whereas Portugal doesn't yet he doesn't perform well in FIFA and Copa. If Portugal has the same as 2002 - 2008 squad, Ronaldo would have won the world cup and euros.

That said, Messi is only good with Iniesta Barcelona and training teams in laliga.

He gave two assists and scored two goals against Madrid on that 2-6 match at the Bernabeu, he had the MVP performance and a goal at the CL final. Just 20 years old. That was just the beggining.

His career is full of 10/10 performances in important matches, superb legendary goals on win or go home matches. Year in, year out, while also breaking all goal scoring and assisting records for both his club and his nation. At the tender age of 26 he was already the top scorer of Barcelona... he was 22 when he scored that legendary solo goal at the Bernabeu to beat Mourinho's Madrid on the CL semifinal, was that because of Iniesta?

He absolutely raped Boateng and Neur last year with one of the best performances of his career. It wasnt Neymar, Suarez or Iniesta who scored that first goal, or who made Boateng look like a fool and dropped him to the floor while shutting Neur up scoring a beautiful lob past him, who just the day before he had said that Messi wasnt scoring against him. It wasnt Iniesta or Xavi who scored that brilliant goal last year against Athletic either who opened the score on the cup final.

Maradona now, thats a good debate, and everyone has their own opinions, no reason to get butthurt about what someone else thinks. My opinion is that Maradona was a great player that just so happens to have had a brilliant game in 86 in a world cup semifinal which includes the best goal of world cup history. He's a legend in my eyes, he's an icon for Argentina, he's a myth, but simply isnt a better player than Messi. He had a 10/10 performance in a semi final world cup match, who later HIS TEAMMATES turned it into a world cup win on the final, not him. Messi is genius Messi year in year out, and doesnt seems like he will stop anytime soon. His consistency is matched by nobody, except maybe CR7 but people are quickly catching on Ronaldo's ways and calling him out on his tap in selfish playstyle, he simply isnt a genius like the other two.

barca players made up the core of the spanish squad that won back to back euros and and a world cup, just LOL @ the idea messi winning anything with that team is an achievment

traditionally in club footy or just footy in general the ultimate test is the league not knock out competitions, the ucl is only there as a glamour competition for money and prestige of super clubs playing each other, by virtue of their sporadic fixturing internationals tournaments are also in a knockout format just LMAO @ messi winning the ucl and not maradona means he's better, to compare messi to maradona would be like him being in a team like valencia or villareal and winning the league not some piss ant ucl competition

Not sure if you forgot to quote another poster for the 2nd half of that post but I didn't mention Maradona or CR7. That being said, great points in your post and as i said earlier I agree that Messi is GOAT and I've not argued against his brilliance in any of my posts ITT

Messi wouldn't have been given the opportunity to showcase his brilliance without the ball control that Xavi, Iniesta etc provided as a foundation for the tika-taka football. His inability to reach similar heights at international level is enough evidence to prove that point and you just have to appreciate how influential Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Pique, Puyol and Daniel Alves (very underrated) have been during Messi's glory years at Barcelona. You've got to look at the common factor in success and when it's said and done, the fact is that the Barcelona's Spanish contingent have won with and without Messi.

When watching football I like to appreciate more than just the goal scorers and assist kings because sometimes you don't even have to touch the ball to have had a great influence on a goal. As I've grown older I've started to appreciate interceptions, tackles, hold up play, solid marking, off the ball runs, positioning etc much more.

You mentioned Messi's individual performances in big games and I agree that his moments of brilliance helped win games. But look at the big games when Barcelona have been defeated over the years against the likes of Liverpool (2-2 agg 2007), Man Utd (1-0 agg 2008), Inter (3-2 agg 2010), Chelsea (3-2 agg 2012), Bayern Munich (7-0 agg 2013), Real Madrid (too many to mention lol), and Atletico (2-1 agg 2014 and 3-2 agg 2016). If you watched those games you would have noticed that despite some of them getting lucky, most of them won because they they limited their "ball controllers" and not just because they stopped Messi. You can't on one hand say Messi's moments of brilliance won games for Barcelona then blame his Argentina teammates for him not winning games at international level. It's either Messi's ability/inability to perform won/lost games or you've got to place equal importance on team performance during a win or defeat.
