Man...
LOL it's ridiculous. You can't invite people to stand up for you and then charge them after. Really bad form. If you wanted a suit, you would have gone out and bought a suit.

Again, tell him he can have the suit back and cut way back in any contact you have with him.

Some serious lols in this topic. I honestly cant believe when I opened my email and saw the bill from Mr. Lawyer.

We've been friends for a while even though I always felt a distance between us, but his cheapness was always out of control, like I hadnt seen him in years and there was 4 of us at breakfast and he broke the bill apart and was insisting on our extra .37 cents of whatever for the like 31$ total bill split 4 ways.

I am thinking about simply writing 'Were you under the impression we thought we would be paying for this?"

It's a little weird because I can't imagine being in a wedding for someone I'm only so-so acquaintances with. But if I were, personally I would be a little more straightforward than that if he didn't tell you about this before the wedding, I would say something like:

Listen [name], I appreciate you inviting me to be a part of your wedding. I had a great time. I wasn't aware that I was going to be charged $500 for the suit. Unfortunately $500 isn't in my budget. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

This guy is a lawyer and loves to argue, he is going to drop something like 'Well its commonly understood that costs are defrayed throughout all involved' sort of thing.

To those guys says cut out, is this really that big of an offense? I agree its chitty as hel but seems generally socially unaware mixed with being out of touch of normal people's budgets.

Do you really want to be friends with someone who when you go out for lunch with you are worried whether you brought the exact change down to 37 cents. He has to learn somehow that being a tightwad might be okay for his finances but not so good for his social life.

The hardest choice for you should be whether to just go nc or call him out for being so out of touch with reality.

Care to explain WHY you're friends with this guy? Because I would've told him to fuk off years ago if he was constantly pulling chit like that. Fukking lol @ "crab socks" as a groomsmen gift.

Honestly what I would do is pay the bill and let him know we aren't friends anymore and hope he enjoys his life.

People like that aren't friends imo

Isn't it clear by now you don't need a loser like that in your life?

He's not your friend.

He's married now, so you'll barely talk to him or see him going forward.

He's a cheap bastard.

Why would you even consider paying him for that suit? Drop the suit and socks and everything else off at his place and wash your hands of him once and for all.

And smash his bride behind his back.

Wow. What a kunt. Please don't pay for this suit OP.

Just say you can't afford it. Return the suit. Go NC.

He just moved into a new house and it needed renovating before the wedding. Our wedding gift to him was to take charge of his renovations and complete it for him. He paid for all materials, we did the reno because we've all got trade backgrounds - it saved him around $8000-10,000 by us doing it over a 2 month period.

We also bought him a surprise BBQ at the end.

I come from a culture were family/friends are very close and spending on them isn't something we think twice about - unless they're kunts ofc.

TBH - it should've been made clear from day 1 - who pays for what. Paying for socks is embarrassing as ****, and if he's going to be a **** mate and u don't mind ending the friendship, post the email to ******** and shame him.
This is real friendship OP. Good job mate. You say traditional culture... what is it bruh?

As said above, pay it off. Send him a letter with the check and a note. Pay for it, make him feel like chit by renouncing your friendship to him, and tell him to kindly fuk off.

Then don't ever talk to that piece of chit again. If I was the groom, I would take care of all my groomsman. I asked THEM to stand up in my wedding. They shouldn't have to pay fukking 528$ for a suit, plus a gift just for several hours in one day. Why wasn't a tux rented?

Nah, tell him,"Listen bro, me paying for the suit....not happening. You've got some nerve asking for money when everything we've done for you has been out of, what I thought was respect and love for the friendship. This sh** you're pulling, childish and inconsiderate seeing as how you NEVER mentioned anything like this until now. These kinds of people don't feel like chit about this stuff. Op, honestly just tell him he can pick up the suit (don't drop it off for him) and return it if he'd like. If he gets fussy, tell him he's always been like this and you're no longer interested in being his friend because he clearly doesn't treat you like one.

Before I drop something big, does it at all change anything if perhaps he asked one of the guys and thought that was sufficient for all of us? Or maybe sent an email or something about 'I want you guys to buy suits, tell me if this is a problem?'

Idk what stand in means but my gf was in her friends wedding last month and spent maybe $1100 total on gown, hair, makeup, rehearsal etc. the max I would spend on a wedding is $120 for the cost of the suit, nothing more. And I would only go to the wedding if it were a close friend. And even if it were a close friend I wouldn't go to the wedding anyways. Ten hours in the sun, no thanks.
