that's from iron and hard water which comes in through the pipes/groundwater. its not actually dirty you just have to scrub it, if you scratch it with your nail it should come off but its tougher with just towels or sponges

I've never had to clean anything that nasty, but I imagine at the very least you will need to use some kind of abrasive cleaner. Maybe even a stronger than standard cleaner from the hardware store. Get a silver scouring pad to, so you can really scrub without scratching it up.

Things won't be such a mission if you don't let them get to this point.
