So it's not a secret to my co-workers that I've been growing out my hair to get dreadlocks. I'm not religious or anything, I just genuinely want long hair since I've had short hair all my life and like the appearance of mature long dreads. I've done plenty of research of washing them, keeping them clean, and learning how to properly maintain them. Of course everyone here is probably well aware of the misconceptions surrounding dreadlocks and myths that simply aren't true.
I've even casually told a few supervisors even the General Manager of where I work that I plan to get them and they didn't say I couldn't, they just had a surprised reaction. However a former manager that left my current job to train out of state has recently transferred back to this location. He was asking an African American co-worker of mine about her braids and them becoming dreads apparently he "likes" them as well. I told him I was growing out my hair to get dreads but instead of being supportive he subtly implied that I wasn't allowed to have them. As if it was against company policy or something...
So I look through all my employee manuals for my current job and nothing in the appearance guidelines explicitly states I can't have them. It simply says "all hair must be neatly tied and or above the shoulders." This guy isn't even the GM of the restaurant and there's no policy against having them.
Am I in the right?

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

If not, the downsides are numerous. It's unhygienic, you're gonna look like a german psytrance freak/whigger/hippe, you can't wash your hair, you will smell like chit, they'll get moldy if you don't cover them in a bunch of hydrophobic coating, and people will automatically assume you are a junkie/criminal/both.
It looks like you're a metalhead, and while there are some dudes in the scene that can pull it off the difference between them and you is that they are rockstars and you have a day job. Don't do it homie.

No adult male should ever have dreadlocks. It's basically a sign that tells me you are stupid and have bad hygiene. I would fire you if you had dreads and never hire you if you interviewed with them.
If I went to a restaurant and my waiter had dreads I would ask for a new waiter or leave the establishment all together. No way am I letting some gross dreads within 10 feet of my food.

Nobody is allowed to say anything to you about your hair whether on your head or on your face. There are dress codes and such but every organization has to provide a "Safe Place" for its employees. If they were to cause you to have emotional stress for talking to you about growing out your hair then they would be in violation of creating a safe place.
Last winter I grew a huge beard and most folks liked it, complimented me on it, etc. I had just stopped shaving one day and didn't look back (since shaved the beard before summer).
Point is, you should be able to grow your hair out without an issue, your employer would likely (thought not definitely) be opening themselves up for a lawsuit.

It is probably because you are a man and he doesn't approve of men with long hair in the work place.
Or it could be because you are not black and people with straighter hair tend to have dreads that are less neat than black people's.

Terrible idea and I'm not usually one to chime in on what another person should/shouldn't do with their body.
There doesn't need to be a specific protocol, management can just use another excuse as a guise to terminate you or bar you from employment.

I can see the potential for a restaurant employee to be told to shave dreads, I get the misconceptions about cleanliness but it doesn't matter - people will be grossed out if their server has a thick pony of dreads and is serving them food. Which will lead to customer complaints and you wanna know what will happen then, that policy is gonna be rewritten boyo.
Just because it doesn't explicitly say it, doesn't mean it won't sooner or later. They just haven't encountered it yet.

It's a bit like walking around wearing a swastika. Yeah, it might not mean you're a nazi and people in the know might realize that you are actually a devout hindu/buddhist/whatever, but most people are still gonna perceive you as a nazi so it's really up to you if you wanna deal with that or not.

Are you ready to pay for the maintenance or so it yourself? The second guy you posted looks like he keeps his roots latched and probably did some felting to maintain the uniformity in down the dreads.
Also are you in the creative field? Cuz you're going to get so much flack. The time to grow them to those lengths also takes strong patience.
