Samsung has urged customers to stop using its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones immediately and return them for exchange as soon as possible, after more reports of the handsets catching fire emerged.

"We are asking users to power down their Galaxy Note 7's and exchange them as soon as possible," said Koh Dong-jin, Samsung's mobile president. "We are expediting replacement devices so that they can be provided through the exchange program as conveniently as possible."

The advice comes after U.S. aviation safety officials warned airline passengers not to turn on or charge Note 7 model handsets during flights.

In the unprecedented move, the Federal Aviation Administration also warned passengers not to store the phones in checked bags, citing "recent incidents and concerns raised by Samsung" about the recalled devices.

Last week, Samsung initiated a global recall of the 5.5-inch handsets after faulty batteries were blamed for 35 reports of exploding handsets and devices catching fire.In one case, a family in St Petersburg, Florida, described how a Note 7 phone left charging in their Jeep caught fire, destroying the vehicle.

On Saturday in Brooklyn, New York,a six-year-old boy was left with burns after the Note 7 he was using to watch videos exploded in his hands. The boy's family called 911 and he was taken to hospital. The boy has returned home following treatment and the family has been in contact with Samsung, but declined to comment further.

In another incident last week in Perth, Australia,a man's Note 7 exploded while it was charging overnight in his hotel room, causing $1,382 worth of property damage and leaving the handset "completely fried", said the owner. Samsung offered a replacement device, and the company confirmed that it was arranging to cover the bill for damages to the hotel room.

Samsung shares fell to their lowest level in two months on Monday, wiping $14.3 billion off the South Korean firm's market capitalisation. "Some said initially the Galaxy Note 7 could be the best smartphone ever, but now its possible the phone will go down as the worst ever," IBK Securities analyst Lee Seung-woo told Fortune, predicting weak sales in the fourth quarter.

Some commentators have blamed the flaw in the device on a rush to manufacture, given that Samsung launched the $900 Note 7 about a month ahead of Apple's iPhone 7 announcementin an attempt to pre-empt Cupertino.

Prematurely selling exploding phones to undercut a competitor's release is a whole other level of pathetic.

Thats how desperate they are against Apple. This is also after the old iPhone 6S from a year ago got better benchmarks than the new Samsungs they just released weeks ago. Apple played the long game for years with their OS balance and is paying off huge dividends now. Samsung cant keep throwing more and more specs at their crappy/bloated unoptimized systems.

This is the nail in the coffin lol

Because random exploding phones wouldn't be a big issue.

Not to mention it was a common link between those 35 phones, and that was the factory battery. That 35 could escalate to a much higher number at any point in time, it would be too much of a risk to ignore it.

Was on a flight yesterday and they DID NOT warn. F*cking scary as f*ck.

This happens, it has happened with Apple before.

The reason people call out Apple is because they don't own up to their mistakes.

Samsung:
Battery has exploded on a few phones, recalls all phones, gives you a free replacement, and when the issues with the Note 7 are resolved let's you switch back to a new Note for free.

Apple:
Phone bends, don't put it in your back pocket.

Losing connection all the time, you're holding it wrong.

Battery explodes, it's not our fault, takes a class action lawsuit for them to rectify the issue.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Exchanged note 7 for S7 edge crew checking in. Feels downgraded man.exe

Going to get another note in a couple weeks when t-mobile store has more in crew checking in.

Inferior phone hardware, not even once.

You realize how many world class computer science people are employed by samsung to make world class phones? This little issues is a drop in the bucket that will be gone from peoples minds in under a year. If anything this shows how pathetic the apple fan base is. When Samsung has a small problem with their phones where 1 out of 25,000 has a problem they recall every single phone. Look at apple when their phones were bending.... look at major car companies who glady put out defective cars just to make a profit. Samsung is acting like a class act.

In related news, I talked to a buddy who recently took a flight and they required anybody with a Note 7 to power them down while in the air.

this exact thing happened to my girlfriends 2011 MBP. she called me one night and said her laptop was swolen. i knew immediately it was her battery getting ready to pop so i told her to leave her laptop outside (the swelling broke everything and it wouldnt work anyways)

guess what apple did? not a damn thing.

Lol not to mention didn't android have a number of phone defects with one of there models a few years back. Go ahead and pay for the same phone with new futuristic headphones though Op.
