A colleague from work asked me how was my lunch and what did I eat? Normally I avoid all human interaction and only talk to bosses and clients but since he asked, I answered and told him I had mince and couscous that I made the night before. When I asked the same question to him, he replied that he could only afford a Greggs pasty because he spent all his money. I laughed thinking he was joking but then he told me that he got his bi-weekly paycheck last Friday and all the money had gone by today. When I asked what he spent it on, he gave me a list of rent, a date, drinking and clubbing, fuel (for his 2004 Renault Clio), eating out 3x a day, taxis, games, and getting so wasted on the weekend after the rugby he lost his keys so broke down his door and had to pay for a new one, an access key, etc.

Normally, I would laugh politely and go back to work, but I decided to ask him, don't you have any savings? To which he replied no. And then I asked, why don't you start saving some when you get paid from the company then? And no joke, his reply was:

Yeah man you're right, I might start saving 10 a week... I have no idea how you managed to pay off a BMW 5-Series in Cash!


I was honestly in shock when I heard this. I couldn't believe people are so poverty. Live so poverty. This guy isn't even a slayer or anything, he dates about once a month, the rest of the time (atleast without alcohol) he's quite introverted. But he blows money like there's no tomorrow. He earns a bit less than me because he's my junior, but he still makes decent enough money to save (20-25K pre-tax). I make around 35,000 so after tax, national insurance and student loans I take home ~25K. For simplicity, lets round down and call my take-home 24K so 2000 per month and 500 per week.

The first thing I do is put away 375 a week of that 500 straight into savings. I then pay my food, petrol, direct debits and leisure from the rest COMFORTABLY. I used to spend on clothes and shoes and games and holidays a lot more but even then I was saving half so 250 a week straight into savings. But now I will save 20,000 ($25,000) a year whilst still living a very good life at home, rent-free.

My 2012 BMW 5-Series cost me 13000 so precisely a year (52 weeks) of 250/week savings; though I had 5K from before so it was 8 months of savings. Since paying it off, I still have a few thousand in the savings pot. If I wanna buy new 150 running shoes, I don't have to wait until next month to be paid. If I want to go on a 7-day hooker binge, I can drop 1.5K and have no ragrets. If I want to buy a 1000 TAG Heuer, I don't have to worry about emptying the bank. If I want to upgrade my 50 inch LG HD tv to a 65 inch Samsung 4K tv, I can do so... but this brah couldn't afford to buy a Tesco Meal Deal for 3 or a Starbucks coffee because of his financial irresponsibility.



I did a quick Google and turns out 16 million people in the UK have less than 100 in savings. There are around 40 million working adults so 1 in 2.5 people have less than $120 in TOTAL savings. And there was an article on the country's main news channel which helps you to save 60,000 by the time you're 40. Which for me is 3 years of savings so age 24-26.

The base model is just over 30,000 but options are quite expensive on BMs. Kitted up you'd be looking at >$50,000

But mine is 2012 model and I paid it all upfront so I got a bargain and it cost me the equivalent of $18,000 total

I honestly just spend as I feel and I still save a good bit (granted most of whatever I dont spend then goes into paying off loans, at least for now). How the f*ck are people so materialistic? I guess I just don't feel a strong need for a lot of stuff. Kind of stick to my routine of lifting and meal prepping probably helps too, but damn mind blown people have to actively try to save.

lol, I make $110k/year gross (after tax abt $75k) before bonus and honestly still haven't cracked savings. I hemorrhage money, don't own a car, don't have a mortgage barely breaking even. Things are a lot better now moved from NY to CT and beginning to see some savings come through but literally got nothing to my name.
