classic mob mentality, get any one of those kids and they are kids alone and they'd suddenly behave very differently. In that situation the older bloke should have grabbed his kid and got out of there immediately, he's an idiot for hitting a girl regardless of whether she deservered it because the sort of cretins like this that get a boost and think they're hard when jumping someone as a group will look for any 'excuse' to start a fight.

If that happened to me with a kid I'd grab him and get out of there, if that's not possible then I'd go for the biggest one in the pack ... whichever one is mouthing off the most then the rest will fall in line fast. Easier said than done though when the adrenaline gets flowing.

Those situations are all trained fighters vs either a drunk people or b weak untrained people in the situation in the OP we're talking about sober adults (high school = adult) you're going to get messed up unless you have a TON of advantages including size, height, training, KO power etc you have to reduce numbers instantly to have a chance at that's assuming they don't just swarm your ass and try to box you.

If truly jumped by 5 guys you are done for.
In reality though it is often different. Of the 5 guys one might be a coward and wait for his friend to engage you and than get in some cheapshots. Another one might just be trying to break it up or hold back his friends. At least in my experience there is rarely a true 5 vs 1 situation.
