Actors/actresses you're surprised never made it big?
Was doing my annual Lord of the rings watch and something that I always think whilst watching these is how did Viggo Mortensen not become a huge star after the series
Quite often stars to a hugely popular series don't seem to go on and do so well (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, the trio from Harry Potter, the hobbits) as I guess it's hard for people to picture them as other characters/get type cast, but the difference between them and Mortensen was that he can actually act (and had the looks to be a leading man).
He still has a great filmography and will potentially get nominated for an Oscar this year with Captain Fantastic, but I'm just surprised his career trajectory wasn't more Harrison Ford post A New Hope. Then you have peeps like Margot Robbie who should probably be a model rather than an actress
Quite a lot of the Lost alumni as well - how has Terry O'Quinn not managed to be in one good film or TV series since Lost?

Viggo was a legit name even before the LOTR trilogy. And after LOTR, he starred in "Eastern Promises," which is arguably his best performance (nominated for an Oscar that he probably should have won).
I always thought that Shawn from "Boy Meets World" (Rider Strong, I think) was going to be a big star; he had the charisma, looks, and acting ability. But aside from "Cabin Fever," I never saw anything from him post- Boy Meets World.

Viggo doesn't like the big hollywood machine. He did History of Violence and Eastern Promises because he likes working with David Cronenberg and Captain Fantastic will be snubbed because the Academy doesn't want to put a spotlight on immunization.
Terry O'Quinn I remember from before Lost as having one of the best scenes in one of my favorite movies The Rocketeer. He played Howard Hughes and stopped security from following someone just to see if his model would fly (and with a great reaction). He worked his butt off in the 90s, after so many seasons of Lost his agent probably told him he could slow down and enjoy himself.

I would assume that the 3 from harry potter (and some others) made so much money that they arent going to just jump into a role they arent very interested in. Emma watson took a break and did her whole feminazi thing but now has beauty and the beast which is a big role.

Anton Yelchin, Emile Hirsch, Cillian Murphy, Thomas Jane.
Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, would have been on my list a while back but they have reached a good amount of fame.

People can get slotted into a certain role on popular (or even unpopular) shows pretty easily. Ex. Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights, Donna/Hyde/Eric from That 70s Show, Jack/Sawyer/etc from Lost. A lot of the time people have a hard time picturing them in another role or not saying "oh that's Eric from That 70s Show!" when he shows up in Spiderman. Definitely more common in TV than movies, which is why a lot of big screen actors are wary of switching over to TV.

He's still very successful, but Edward Norton's career over the past few years has been very disappointing.
Expected Sam Worthington to be bigger than he is as well, though his popularity will no doubt rise again with the Avatar sequels.
Mary Elizabeth Winestead should be huge.

Not that he was ever a great actor, but Scott Mechlowicz's career fell off badddd.
He was the main character from Eurotrip and was also in Mean Creek back in 2004. Looked like he might have a decent career ahead of him but it obviously never materialized.

I was surprised Elizabeth Berridge's career didn't take off after her role in Amadeus (1984). She was young, only 22 at the time, had decent acting ability, and she's super hot. Unfortunately, the only hit movies she's been in since Amadeus were Payback and Hidalgo.

paul giamatti and Edward Norton come to mind. Both are great actors but their careers have plateaued. Paul was on a cable commercial recently, wtf?

I think that Justin Timberlake's acting ability is underrated. I wanted to hate that guy so much on the big screen because I hate ****gy boy bands and pop music but he's super talented and is just as good an actor as he is a singer. Not only that, but he's even a good comedic actor. He has great timing and I feel like that's something that is innate.

Wesley Snipes was big for a couple of years, but I would have thought he would've lasted longer...like a Denzel or Sam L type career. Even with his legal issues, people have always liked him and his earlier 90's movies.
For actresses, I thought hbb Marley Shelton would break out after Pleasantville, but she's been stuck doing straight to video or indie crap.
