There's definitely something in this - it's always a little absurd when some idiot's random ramblings become news, it's like hearing about something someone overheard at the pub. I think society hasn't yet figured out how to weigh online and irl statements differently - they are obviously not the same thing but we still treat them as though they are.

The problem is irl statements have a single context, the context in which they're said. They can be repeated and taken out of context later, but people understand they're hearing a report of the comment, not the comment itself and that context is tied to situation and location. Online statements, on the other hand, take on whichever context in which they are repeated. So a Tinder convo, clearly framed in that specific context, is elevated to international news and is judged as if it were public statement.

Also, it's the effect of news media that any statement reported by the media becomes important because it is in the media. So one random idiot communicating to a person or small group suddenly becomes a person communicating to millions of people, therefore his or her statements must be important, and must represent the opinions of millions of others. It's a holdover from when the media only reported the statements of people who had something important to say.
