This recent event of the use an assault car and knife to kill some people and stab a UK cop to death*, before dude taken down with a gun **, had me looking at a few vids. I came on this one and it just blows my mind to see. Not even the Aussies nor Canadians put their LE through this. Watching this vid so cringe worthy it drops my T by 50 points.

Cliffs:

Cue Benny Hill theme before watching vid
Feel bad for the LEO of the UK who deal with that
Takes 10 cops to deal with one nut with a knife
Can't fathom justification for it.

Is that what people in the UK think cops should have to do? Be chased around by some nut with a knife like hapless idiots?

In the US, those first steps he takes toward them he would have been burned down from lead poisoning. I truly can't believe anyone in the UK or other low T euro countries is OK seeing that yet make any comments about US police. In the US, don't need 10 cops to deal with some POS like that, just one is needed.

there are armed response officers, but they are inside the grounds of parliament / train stations / airports, not on the streets.. although some are

Bit of an inaccuracy there, it was an armed policeman. Not all of our officers are unarmed, highly trained specialists get firearms. The officer who got stabbed unfortunately wasn't one of those.

There's more armed police in the UK than there's ever been and they're strategically placed in areas where they're likely to be needed (transport hubs, tourist hotspots, power stations etc.) as well as armed units being on call at all times across the country.

I personally believe more police should be armed but I wouldn't hand every bobby a gun. We don't have an armed citizenry like the US do, we don't have anywhere near the number of firearms in circulation, we don't need routinely armed police.

By all means, give them all tasers but don't just start handing out firearms.

This of course excludes Northern Ireland where the police are routinely armed for obvious reasons.

Yep. About time Brit officers start carrying. Srs. You one up the threat if you can. Not having a firearm against a psycho with a knife starts the officer off at an instant disadvantage. Not saying it would have saved him in this scenario because no one knows how he'd react, but the training and access to a gun could have changed the outcome.

Of course the flip side of the argument is that your cops are militarized and scared chit-less of your armed populace. They are also doing the job of psychologist, councilor, sheriff, and solider... with insufficient training. Hence all the tear gassing, excessive forcing, shooting, and killing of disabled, innocents, minorities, or just about anyone who can be perceived as "not complying". Definitely a model for all of us: shoot first, then let the prison system sort 'em out.

You had the cop stabbed to death, and a vid of 10 cops chasing one guy around with a knife, yet still think it's about citizens having guns as the only reason to arm police? The guy who killed 200 people in France with the truck, stopped by a guy with a gun.

That's the disconnect I can't fathom. I agree, you don;t just start handing out fire arms, it should come with extensive and ongoing training.

BTW, most LEOs in the US do not have adequate, much less ongoing, training with fire arms, but that's another topic

Armed Metropolitan Police officer. His exact duty at the time was Michael Fallon's bodyguard, doesn't change the fact he's 1. An armed policeman and 2. One of a sht ton of armed coppers around things like parliament. If it helps, they're also armed with MP5s.

And the truck attacker was stopped by an armed policeman? Yeah, it's almost like we put armed coppers where these things are likely to happen. A bit like what I said in my original post. When 50 coppers are killed because none of them had a gun and they were trying to club someone to death you'll have a point.

Also, guy has a knife, you're not an armed copper, taser the kunt. Job done.

OK. That's great and all but clearly the situation comes up. It did for this officer. Would you rather have training and tools for that one moment in your career that could save your life or just have a ho-hum not going to happen so why need it attitude? Dumb. I would hope to never draw my gun and shoot someone on duty or be put in that situation. I sure as hell want my gun and training if that situation were to arise. Can't win a fight if you were never in it to begin with.

Cop is just slang for a policemen of any kind more or less. If Federal, like FBI, SS, etc, not usually referred to as cops, but some due. What ever he is, he was acting as security/body guard for Fallon vs say an armed cop on the job standing there who killed the POS. Had the cop he stabbed to death been armed, likely would not have happened. If you're OK with 10 cops running around like that to deal with one guy with a knife, that's your biz. I obviously will not change your mind.

I'm astounded any citizen there would expect their police to do that job with minimal means to protect themselves. Obviously, very different mindset between Yanks and Brits there.
