Good night! Is there a model with buying that doesn't require me dropping 2 G's to start?!?!?
I think that the stock CZ SP-01 is good enough, or if you want to spend a bit more you can get the SP-01 Tactical. Then later on get like $400 worth of work done on it (internal trigger stuff). The annoying part with this option is having to send your gun in and not have it for a month or so. The other option is to just do the work yourself.

The Shadow 2 is $1300 MSRP, so you could probably get it for less than that.

I think that this is probably a better buy than what I got:

https://czcustom.com/new-firearms/cz....html?___SID=U

I'm pretty sure it's what I got minus the competition barrel and ACCU bushing; both of those probably don't make much of a difference for me.
@millz i was just looking at the "tuesday night steel" at rio salado vids on IG. that looks pretty damn fun.
It's extremely fun, pm me if you want to go and I'll meet up. You'll need to do their safety course for first time competition shooting. Also, you won't be able to use your FN 5.7 as they don't allow it on the steel. If you want, you could use my G17 just get your own ammo for it.
Morning boyos.

Jelly of millzs cz shooting numbers. You've got more thru one gun in a year than all mine ever I think.
I have to in order to be less shiity.

My birthday present last year was the first season Miami Vice DVDs, completing my collection. I used to play them in order all day long while I was doing stuff around the house. The show started a couple years after we moved from Miami to Atlanta and it helped with homesickness.

Pick both. So nothing "Competitive" haha, but my ammo isn't the thing holding me back from being better

Good question, I am curious to know myself...

I got the CZ back in Jan 2016. Since then I've averaged about 3 of the weekly steel matches each month. About 10 USPSA matches. I've done my personal training about 10 times since Jan 2016. I did a Frank Proctor class and also a Pat McNamara class.

Here's a good estimate:

Code:+--------------+-----+-----+-------+
| Match | Num | Rds | Total |
+--------------+-----+-----+-------+
| Weekly Steel | 45 | 200 | 9000 |
| USPSA | 10 | 250 | 2500 |
| Training | 10 | 400 | 4000 |
| Classes | 2 | 600 | 1200 |
| | | | 16700 |
+--------------+-----+-----+-------+So probably about 17k through it in 15 months. I've done 0 maintenance other than some light cleaning. To clean it I just field strip it then spray it out with brake cleaner lmao, trying to keep the front sight fiber optic away from the brake cleaner. I then relube with lucas gun oil.

I'm pretty sure there's a part or two I need to replace about now. I want to say the slide stop, and a trigger spring or something... I'll need to ask the CZ Custom dudes.

EDIT:

Reestimated with weekly steel being average of 200rds, and USPSA being average of 250.
this your p-01? Mirin hard af.

For me the biggest factor when i consider effective home defense ammo in 5.56 (or any other caliber) is a. has to stop a bad guy effectively, a2. has to stop before entering my neighbors house nd hitting someone unintentionally.

The 17k round are on my SP-01. I've only shot about 500 rds through my P-01.

lmao yeah I've seen her out there once or twice a month. She's not very good, but I give her props for being out there and getting after it. She's definitely a good looking woman.

She's always there with her boyfriend. I chuckled when I saw that her boyfriend is an inch or two shorter than her, so he's probably like 5'3 or 5'4.

I've seen Michelle Viscuzi there quite a few times, she's very good looking as well, and she's a very good shooter.

I myself never have and probably won't any time soon. Fortunately I have CZ Custom locally, I don't mind spending the premium to have them do it for me.

IIRC the last time I priced it out, if I were to buy parts from CZ Custom (or CGW) and DIY, I'd save like $200. But it'd probably take me a few hours to do and I run the risk of screwing it up. IMO having CZ Custom just do it for the $200 is worth it.

I'm sure that some of the basic stuff can be learned and is doable, but yeah I bet it's more difficult than a Glock.
recommend me a sickening gun to shoot in this type of thing?

IH_OKR1tgTE

how many people fall down and shoot themselves
That's Muneki, he's super good. Seems like a good guy, always see him helping. I don't know a thing about Open guns, but there's a ton of people that shoot Open there so you could probably ask around.

Pretty much everyone is shooting a 2011 as an Open gun, some are using the CZ Custom "Czechmate". The two most popular divisions at Rio are Open and Limited.

ETA:

Haven't seen anyone shoot themselves, but you'll see DQs every now and then.

I've seen a Glocknade blow up in someone's hand.

I didn't see it happen but I was at the range when a round came back off of something from the berm and hit someone right in the forehead. They were bleeding pretty good and gave them a concussion.

I guess there's been an influx of new shooters that have been DQing a lot because breaking the 180 or finger in trigger guard at inappropriate times or other stupid crap. They used to do a 30min "new shooter briefing" every Tue night at 6:00 then you could shoot afterwards, but they stopped doing that. Now you have to do a longer new shooter class on Monday nights, I think it costs $20 for the class, then you can shoot the next day in TNS (assuming you "pass" the class) for free.

So it's a bit more of a hurdle to get started, but it's necessary so that they can make sure the new shooters coming in aren't garbage safety wise.

So, speaking of that garbage.

Question for MFC
What % of gun owners, in your opinion/experience/observation, follow Rule #3 and keep their finger off the trigger unless their sights are on target and/or they are preparing to fire?

What entry level/amateur competition groups/etc should I be looking for near me? For right now planning on sticking with my factory VP9, eventually will find something else but it's what I have currently. This year I'd like to get started on just getting my fundamentals/confidence up and next year I'd like to start trying to actually compete in whatever I could find local to me.

A lot of ranges have their own little something or other that they host, have you checked their calendars/schedules/asked the staff?

I've only been to 2 ranges outside of work, haven't found one I like that is near me yet but I probably should check around the area first. Cheaper and closer to go to a random spot in the country to shoot.

If you can set up your own stuff just get a shot timer and make some targets, set up some stages, there are a bunch of them posted here and there you can duplicate and run drills with etc. Jelly0

Not NEARLY enough . . . I'd say it's no better than 50/50 that people keep the booger hook off the bang switch.

Almost every time I am the RO for a stage I will see at least 1 or 2 people do something questionable and I'll mention it to them. Usually it's where they have the finger outside the trigger guard, but it's just kind of floating right outside; as opposed to indexed on the frame.

Sometimes you see people racking the slide or loading a mag from within their "shooter box" whilst their finger is in the trigger guard but not touching the trigger, that's super sketchy and I'll DQ them on it if I am 100% sure of what I saw, but sometimes it's hard to tell.

(Un)Coincidentally, the majority of the time it's old dudes that I see this with. Rarely do I see that with guys under 40 years old.

A lot of the time, the stages will have a natural flow of moving left > right, or right > left. I try to stand on the opposite side of the direction the shooter will be moving, whether I am spectator or RO/SO. I make special note of doing this when I see the person looks nonathletic as fuk. I've seen so many nonathletic people people almost eat ****, I worry they'll fall down and squeeze off a round or two towards the direction they're falling.

Look up locale USPSA clubs:

https://www.uspsa.org/locate-uspsa-clubs.php

Like Farley said, there's probably a club near you that has some type of informal match that they do a couple of times per month (re: not an actual USPSA match). Then they probably do at least 1 USPSA match per month as well.

If you're confident with your ability to be safe, then I recommend you just jump in and get started. No one cares about your skill level, people are generally friendly and happy to help newer competitors. Just jump in and get started, it doesn't matter where you start, it matters how far you go from there.

I've tried to talk a lot of friends into competing, but based on their excuses I get the sense that they don't want to compete because they don't want to test their metal. They don't want to find out that they aren't actually as good as they like to think they are. I respect the D-class shooters that are out there improving or having fun, more than I respect the tacticool tier 0 operators that don't compete at all.

Outside of knowing the order of operations and being unfamiliar with how they do stuff, I don't mind showing off how bad I probably am compared to others. I would venture in saying that as far as safety goes as well I'm good, I work armed nuclear security and our range officers are't shy about making sure everyone is handling themselves accordingly. Found a range with some informal practice/"competition" that I'm going to check out tomorrow if I get a chance, my biggest problem is everything decent is at least 30-45 minutes away.

Its the sketchiest rule to see broken. Out of all the golden rules, this one is the one that makes the gun go bang, pretty much 100% of NDs start with this rule being ignored.

I have been around people who have gotten careless and sweep things they dont want destroyed with their barrels, but seeing someone with chitty trigger disciple is the scariest of all imo.

To answer in a % rate, I would say its in the .00X-.000X% range, since Ive shot hundreds of times, but have never been witness to a ND or had to call someone out on trigger discipline...only seen it on video etc thank god.

They do suck. I'll have random days where I wake up and just being alive is pain and bending over is especially stupid. But for the most part, squats have been good. I put the belt on for anything >= 225.

Used to buy almost exclusively WWB because it was a decent deal available on shelves at Wal-Mart. Now, I can almost guarantee that loading WWB will result in failures to eject in my USP. Haven't bought any since buying the new guns, so not sure how they would deal with it. But it's the only ammo I've ever had problems with. Even went to the range exclusively for testing one day and shot 450 rounds of 5 different brands in 1 hour (RIP thumbs). Didn't have time to finish off the last box of 50. Brought 2 boxes of 50 each brand. Shot all 50 of 1 box of each, saving WWB for last. And then shot all 50 of the next box in the reverse order. So all WWB were back to back, in the middle of shooting. Had something like 4 or 5 FTEs and all were with the WWB, which were all shot in the middle of the session.

Cliffs: I don't buy Winchester ammunition anymore.

I've literally only been shooting at a range three times. I avoid them at all costs and only shoot at BLM land. When there, the vast majority of people are much safer and competent, at least that I've seen. There aren't really any cities nearby so I assume almost everyone comes from a distance (little over an hour for me) and people putting in that time are typically going there for a purpose.

I did see one dude out there ND, and that's the only ND I've seen at a range/BLM.

In the Army, I saw at least six NDs that I can recall, all in Afghanistan.

Three were from Germans, 1. an MG3- dude was in the prone and picked it up to start moving and shot a burst point blank into the ground, almost took his foot off. 2. their version of our Mark 19- dude lobbed two grenades into a village. 3. a fukin tank- 25mm chain gun shot at a wall and made us dive for cover as this was soon after a tic. The fourth was from a Hungarian (DShK). The fifth and sixth were from my company, one was a cherry in another platoon- 240 while he was clearing it, and the last was from a cherry in my platoon- M4, 3 in the morning after a week long mission and probably only two hours of sleep per night.

I went to the NRA HQ shooting range when I was out in DC and I looked for unsafe handling. To my surprise, everyone I saw the few hours we were there was very safe and in control. I was impressed. They had two RSOs that had good control over everything, and weren't nazis. The booth next to us was an instructor teaching a new guy to shoot. Overall it was a great experience.
