400 mg in one dose sounds a little high, but not crazy. 700 mg is asking for trouble.

Professor is a bonehead

A light dose will vary from person to person based on a ton of different factors

Not to mention if you start using huge doses of caffeine to workout you won't be able to workout without it and as your tolerance builds up you'll just get diminishing returns

Brb taking 400+mg of caffeine
Brb can't sleep that night
Brb wake up the next day with no energy
Brb workout the next day sucks balls unless I take more caffeine
Brb next week have to up the dose to get the same effect
Brb week after that just taking the stuff to keep withdraws away

Depends on your tolerance. Nowadays I drink at least a full pot, 12 cups of coffee daily (teeth hate him). I can go right to sleep after drinking a monster now but I remember getting a decent caffeine buzz from them in the past and they only have 200mg. I've taken 600mg in caffeine pills before training a few times on top of my normal coffee intake and didn't feel jittery or have heart flutters anything.

700 is pretty high for someone who doesn't suck down caffeine all day though.

9 fukkkin mg/kg endurance study on highly trained vo2max athletes
The present study examined whether a high caffeine dose improved running and cycling performance and altered substrate metabolism in well-trained runners. Seven trained competitive runners [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) 72.6 +/- 1.5 ml.kg-1.min-1] completed four randomized and double-blind exercise trials at approximately 85% VO2max; two trials running to exhaustion and two trials cycling to exhaustion. Subjects ingested either placebo (PL, 9 mg/kg dextrose) or caffeine (CAF, 9 mg/kg) 1 h before exercise.

Endurance times were increased (P less than 0.05) after CAF ingestion during running(PL 49.2 +/- 7.2 min, CAF 71.0 +/- 11.0 min) and cycling (PL 39.2 +/- 6.5 min, CAF 59.3 +/- 9.9 min).
hugeeeee differences in time till exhaustion!
50mins placebo vs 71 mins caffeine
40 mins placebo vs 60 mins caffeine

thats absolutely insane for subjects with the vo2 max of lance armstrong.

Fuk that. I may have sensitivity to caffeine but anything more than two cups of tea (~85mg) has me feeling like an ADHD maniac on the verge of cardiac arrest.

First off- the correct term is PhD in exercise physiology. DR is not an acronym, it is just short for Doctor (Dr.)

Secondly- regardless of education, anyone can spew broscience just as good as the next guy.

The MAXIMUM recommended dose of caffeine intake per day is 400mg. >400mg of caffeine is just asking for an arrhythmia - that amount of caffeine if no bueno for your heart

And caffeine is 100% a diuretic. It is an adenosine antagonist, and dilates the afferent arteriole, increasing your GFR. it also inhibits Na+ reabsorption, which is a mechanism in which you conserve water.

WTF do you mean by "it only empties the content of the loop of henle?" that is normal physiology...caffeine has nothing to do with that. The content of the loop is the filtrate, already filtered by the glomerulus. It is destined to be excreted, unless it is reabsorbed- and anything that blocks reabsorption is a diuretic....

Also, if something increases water from the loop of henle

I was stupid and put caffeine pills in an empty Excedrin pill bottle.

That feel when you accidently pop 4 caffeine pills (200mg)
Believe it or not I had to go to sleep to escape the feeling of being sick and nauseated

I use to take mr hyde pre workout which had 420 mg of caffeine plus other stimulants I was able to handle it but somethings I noticed, it took away my appetite and I could barely eat my postworkout meal, I sweat buckets of water and I started to lose weight, once I came off it my appetite went back up and I started to gain weight again, I guess if you are bulking you should stay away from high caffeine.

Meaning that you have the urge to urinate and hyperpolarize the uretur. Im sure you know wayyyyy more about this stuff bro but

Heres a study citing that caffeine does not cause a loss of fluid balance
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19774754

and heres a study showing that the effects of exercise negate the weak dietetic effects of caffeine.

Man, one time I took a crap load of PWO to force myself to go to the gym, and my nose started bleeding when lifting.

I take 200mg before gym, I think I'm going to up it to 300mg because 200mg doesnt do anything for me.

took a break from PWO for like a week...came back and took half a scoop too much, I think, on accident (about 275-300mg total)

legitimately thought I was going to have a heart attack. I didn't eat til the next day I was so tweaked

700mg would kill me on the spot, for sure.

Lol, just read the results which stated "caffeine in large doses (at least 250-300 mg, equivalent to the amount found in 2-3 cups of coffee or 5-8 cups of tea) results in a short-term stimulation of urine output in individuals who have been deprived of caffeine for a period of days or weeks.A profound tolerance to the diuretic and other effects of caffeine develops" Meaning if you don't regularly consume caffeine it is in fact a diuretic.

I would assume there is a significant difference in the amount of caffeine an endurance athlete and joe schmo the 300lb IT guy can tolerate. Endurance athletes typically have incredibly low blood pressure and resting heart rates as it is on top of great vasculature. For someone who is lifting heavy ass weights I feel like super large quantities of caffeine would not be a great idea either. Regardless I feel like the 400 max limit is for the general population and that certain groups can get away with intaking more than that.

Regardless I feel like your professor must have said it in a different context because for most people 400 mg at once would cause an immediate colon evacuation.
