~-~-Official Misc STOICISM thread-~-~

hai brahs, last year I started getting into STOICISM and imo it's pretty helpful in life, I know some other miscers r into it too cuz I sometimes see other threads about it and chime in, wondering if we can get a legit thread going where ppl share info they have learned and learn more about it etc

here's some info i put together, hope other miscers will contribute more info

Wikipedia definition:
Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy that flourished throughout the Roman and Greek world until the 3rd century AD. Stoicism is predominantly a philosophy of personal ethics which is informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world. According to its teachings, as social beings, the path to happiness for humans is found in accepting that which we have been given in life, by not allowing ourselves to be controlled by our desire for pleasure or our fear of pain, by using our minds to understand the world around us and to do our part in nature's plan, and by working together and treating others in a fair and just manner.

https://youtu.be/3QztdN4hUKA

links with good info to get started learning about it:
https://dailystoic.com/what-is-stoic...t-you-started/
https://howtobeastoic.wordpress.com/stoicism-101/
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoicism

BOOKS:

the main original sources from legit Roman stoics that we have surviving are books/letters from
Epictetus
Seneca
Marcus Aurelius

obviously if u really wanna get seriously into it it is good to read their books, BUT it is probably easier to START OFF by reading a modern book that explains it more so that u understand it better when u read the original ancient roman books

https://www.amazon.com/Stoicism-Art-.../dp/1444187104
I'm reading this one right now, so far it is the BEST book I found for just really laying it all out step by step very clearly, if u really want to get a good explanation of the overall subject very understandable I highly recommend, good book to start with

https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Good-Li.../dp/1522632735
also a good book to start with, this is the one I actually read first that got me into it, he kinda waters down some of it to be all about "tranquility" but still gives good overview of topic making it very clear and really nothing wrong with just going for tranquility

https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Stoic-M.../dp/0735211736
short daily readings, u can also just read it all thru and get pretty good overview of the philosophy

I haven't read about the philosophy but I feel that's my default state.

Think about it. Any time you're frustrated in life, dig deep into the cause of the frustration, and you'll find almost invariably that you are seeking desire or trying to escape pain. It's all irrelevant, the pain and the pleasure, and temporary. If you let go of the need to be happy all the time, you'll become happy.

The only downfall is in not doing the last part of the definition, namely using your mind to understand the world and treating others fairly. If you ignore this part, you slip into nihilism, where NOTHING matters. If instead you live your life seeking understanding and treating others well, you'll elevate society and yourself.

Don't stoics also strive to suppress positive emotions as well?

One is Greek/Roman and the other is Indian/Asian. Come to think of it they are very similar. Stoicism uses virtue to get rid of pain. Buddhism uses love and compassion to get rid of suffereing.

I'm totally not a Stoic, but there are some principles I follow from it. Currently reading the following

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday - More of a more digestible and applicable version of Stoicism to the modern day.

Perfect timing proudmanlet!

If anything this philosophy teaches is to not allow emotions to impair judgement and to exercise resilience while going through the struggles in life. Certainly every young man should learn about even if they don't apply everything in it.

I like striking more than anything. I just think the more "pure" form of fighting is where everything is blended, which is why I watch and appreciate MMA. If I did another match I'd do kickboxing tbh. I like grappling as a sport too, but I love the aggression of throwing strikes man.

The ring you can cut off and corner your opponent much easier. A cage allows you to move better, especially laterally. Some fighters have a hard time transitioning from the ring to the cage. I mostly trained in the cage tbh.

I cannot call myself a stoic, because I do not measure up to that ideal, but out of all the philosophies I've encountered so far in my life, stoicism is the one that I try to follow. I've read several books by the early stoics and am currently reading A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy by William B. Irvine. Of course, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is always on my nightstand.

Good topic, proudmanlet.

More Miscers should read Stoic philosophy, then they can claim to practice Stoicism instead of LDARjk

I have myself adopted a few philosophies of Stoicism in my life , good stuff

Meditations is one of the greatest things you can read if you are not happy with your life and are looking for a different way of viewing things.

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

In, this is my favorite non fiction stuff to read

There's a near endless amount of philosophy and literature to read that is heavily influenced by Stoicism. I want to read Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl next.

Meditations on nightstand crew. You don't even really need open the book to become aware of it's immensity. Just the fact that a Roman Emperor wrote these tidbits, almost as personal confessions and admonissions, is enough to free your thoughts.
