I saw a dude in the hospital who lost one leg, mangled the other, and also lost an arm and half his face. He was still alive! Literally looked like a comic book character with half his body missing/mangled, so if (read: when) you crash, maybe you'll do it in a cool way like that guy. At least 90% of drivers are distracted retards, so good luck.

As greenleaf said drive in a controlled environment. On opens roada and in traffic the amount of times ive seen cars cut off bikes is ridiculous. You cant control what other drivers do but the thrill of riding a bike can be met on tracks and closed roads

I'd probably not get a motorcycle in the US. You guys can't drive cars and have weird intersections/roads. Safe option would be to get a dirt-bike and just troll around learning to wheelie/stoppie and ride on mx tracks/woods if thats an option where you live.

Everyone goes down eventually, it's not a matter of 'if', but of 'when'.
About a year ago I was going too fast around a corner on my SV and the rear tyre slipped and locked after I tried to apply a bit of rear brake during the corner (such a dumb mistake). The bike highsided but luckily all that was broken was the rear turn signal. Had some road rash and swollen ankle but got off pretty lucky for the most part.
I wouldn't give up riding motorcycles for anything in the world tbh, the sense of freedom you get when you ride is truly something else. I'd say go for it, but invest in some proper gear before going for a ride.

Part of the reason I gave up my bike was because I was going to get RIP'd any minute. I was a pretty 'conservative' rider, but no one looks out for bikes. The amount of times I just didn't get seen and nearly got taken out, was out of control.
The first 100m I ever rode on a bike, a massive Land Cruiser pulled out and didn't see me at all, slammed on the brakes and nearly lost it. That was one of dozens of incidents.
My bro has crashed his twice so far, both his fault though lol.

I'd love to learn one day, but I can't even ride a bicycle so that ends any chances for me--I know I'd probably kill myself if I tried.
I think it's pretty obvious from this thread that the risk is pretty high when riding a motorcycle for so many different reasons but it's up to your discretion. I'll add one story to this mix though:
Guy I knew from highschool got into a pretty bad accident. C5 quadriplegic--doctors thought he would have been brain dead. But he worked his ass off with PT/OT/Trainers and today he's competing. It's amazing considering the damage, but it's a reminder to stay safe boyo.

I've always wanted a bike since like 2006 after I was out of high school...an r6 was always my dream bike.... Never happened yet sometimes still day dream about owning one

When i was in Istanbul (imagine bikes everywhere, ten times crazier road and drivers)
I saw a car run into a bike with two people on it, no helmets and they both died, saw one of their legs snapped in half with the bone sticking out
Honestly the idea of riding a bike sounds really fun and i would like to do it but its just the fact sooner or later youre gonna crash and its gonna be alot worse than if you were in a car, probably wont even be your fault either

Don't, people who work in ER call motorcyclists 'organ donors' they have a cynically funny saying about them ,I know that. I have often thought of getting a bike, but what puts me off is not my own riding skills because I would ride like a pussy, but the stupid fuks who are allowed to drive.That goes for old people, people who use their mobiles while driving, road ragers,women in massive suvs..... I just see so many bad examples of driving just don't think it's worth the risk.

Have a custom Triumph Bonneville, have had an accident and broken my leg. Drunk homeless lady ran into the road late at night, it had been raining earlier that evening, I lost control trying to avoid her.

I avoid riding with sport bike groups like the plague. Everytime I've gone out on a ride with one something has gone wrong.

I'm interested in trail riding bikes and ATVs, but wouldn't risk it on the roads with poverty drivers everywhere.

It fully depends on what type of bikes you wanna start riding.
My best mate and I have rode bikes since we were little kids. Nowdays, he rides sport bikes mostly and I exclusively ride cruisers (I have a custom harley sportster). My friend has had quite a few accidents over the years while I have managed to stay accident free.
Bikes vary. If you are riding a sport bike like my friend does, you'll most likely be weaving in and out of traffic picking up speed fast. You are also more likely to go flying off your bike because of the seat positioning. Whereas if you ride a cruiser like I do, you drive at a slower pace with limited handling, and that adapts to your driving style (much slower, less likely to crash imo)
Personally I just prefer cruisers because im lazy as fuk and prefer driving slowly and enjoying the view. Get a sports bike if you just like speeding and getting from A to B faster. Just remember, nobody gives a fuk about bikes on the road

I ride RR bikes in Australia, NZ and Japan and other bikes in SEA. Bolt 900 and TZM 150 2stroke in Thailand, brb 2 whores on the back

I moved to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam about a year ago.
You have no choice but to ride a bike out here (moped or motorbike). But since there's thousands of bikes on the road at any given time you pretty much just blend in with them like a swarm of bees. It's the nutbag crazy bus drivers and truck drivers that you gotta watch out for out here.
