An immature person has an experience like that and they find it funny. For instance, in Twin Peaks there's the "log lady" and she carries a log like it's a baby. That seems funny, until you actually meet someone like that and realize, her baby probably died, or she killed it, or she thinks she did, and so on. Then, it's not so funny that a lady got so heart broken, she went crazy.
The mature person sees it's human tragedy.
Where I grew up, there was a woman who walked around in a bridal gown daily. She was going to get married and the guy never showed up, she went crazy, and wore the gown henceforth. My family would laugh when they saw her, but even as a kid I knew it was horrible.
Twin Peaks is collection of that kind of stuff. But, instead of having weird people with rational explanations, if does the immature people thing of having supernatural ones. There's so many weird and nasty people in town because of a dark force in the woods. That's the old primitive way of explaining events and natural occurrences via the supernatural.
I don't like Lynch anymore because all of his movies have that kind of theme.

It's like a$$hole boys seeing someone cry and then doing an extended imitation of the crying. I used to beat kids like that up in high school.
As an adult I've known all kinds of people who went crazy, got murdered, killed themselves and so on. I can't stand watching normal crime shows now let alone something that kind of makes fun of it or sees it as "weird", but that's just me.
However, the show has some great stuff and genuine weirdness that is something else. I would love to see a show about how it was all made.
For instance, the FBI guy has these dreams, which are real, and this foreign looking midget comes out, walks in this odd way and talks backwards, saying creepy cryptic sh!t! When I first watched that----the WTF reactions was awesome. Anyway, I'd love to know how all of this was explained to the actors, that would be fun to see.
Side note: I am older and have a great memory. I can recall seeing Star Wars in the movies as a little kid. There was nothing like it, ever, so it was shocker. Jurassic park was a shocker, for the effect. The firs Batman movie was amazing. And, Twin Peaks was the first really weird TV show probably ever, so it's noteworthy.
It was designed for my generation who were what modern hipsters imitate and I'm amazed it ever got on TV.

Best show of all time up until about Episode 16 when it just goes massively downhill.
Will be literally shaking when watching the new season premiere.
David Chase said The Sopranos was 'Twin Peaks in New Jersey' or something like that. I don't agree with that but almost all the greatest shows of the modern era are indebted to Twin Peaks. Absolutely unique.

I tried rewatching and I have gotten past this type of cynical stuff.
In the first episode the director, who I think is a nut, purposely had these long still shots of people crying. He obviously thinks it's funny that people are breaking down crying because someone got murdered. When I was younger, I found the show to be hilarious, but now that I know what it's like to be in a sh!tty situation, it's not so funny.
Anyway, I used to get a giant bottle of port, get together with friends, get drunk, and laugh my ass off at the weirdness. The scenes with the midget, holy sh!t, but that was then.

You have to look at the context of the whole show.
In addition, all of his movies have a morbid fascination with weirdness. I love weirdness, but his is tragic weirdness, not amusing.

Lynch's genius is that his stuff is really weird but that weirdness somehow connects with people on a very visceral level. If it were just weird it would be much easier to dismiss.

The show clearly makes fun of the melodramatic nature many hour long dramas as well as many of the tropes that come with it. At least as far as the pilot is concerned.

Tragedy is just that, it's not weirdness.
What he makes is a definition of pornography.
That's where you cast a lurid light on something that should be private, typically for the sensation of seeing that thing exposed. A great example of how the weather channel would show "weather porn" which would be endless clips of people's homes getting destroyed in storms. There's no reason to watch that, people just do because they want to see the homes getting blown up.
So, if you have all of this massive grief in a very trivial and stupid story, you're just putting it in there for the fun of it. Twin Peaks had no message, it was just weirdness for it's own sake. All of his stuff is like that.

You have a genuinely strange way of thinking. That's not a criticism and you seem like a smart guy. I'm assuming you've had a pretty traumatic experience or lost loved ones.
Anyway as for Twin Peaks, each to their own but I'm counting the days until May 21st (22nd in the UK, simulcast on Sky Atlantic).

Also in retrospect you've got to wonder did the guy realise she was cray and that's why he legged it .. cause as devastating as it might be, no-one sane would act like that. The director David Lynch once worked in a mental institution. He said that was inspiration for lots of his stuff.

Watched Twin Peaks as a kid (probably far too young); weird, weird show.
Also someone asked about bewbs (lol) and while I don't remember any nudity, there was a lot of subtle sexual stuff with Sherilynn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle (who looked nice then) and the sheriff with his asian wife/gf.
Simple minds need simple answers.
