Depends. There is a lot more stress and pressure to learn and get qualified in all kinds of shyt-even more than enlisted. I dont know about other branches, I was Navy, but I would NOT want to be SWO (surface warfare officer) or Unrestricted Line Officer. Pick one of those more specialized roles like the one of the healthcare (ie Nurse Corps) it probably wouldnt be too bad at all honestly.

I'll circumvent the entire thing and say whether you agree with the use of your military or not, it is YOUR military. While we don't need or even want over the top respect the way the military is glorified now is still in response to the horrendous way they were treated during and after Vietnam.



Ultimately we could argue it's YOUR fault where and what your military is doing. The 19 year old grunt doesn't give a chit about your political inclinations.

Downsides:
- You'll probably start smoking or dipping.
- A lot of civilian jobs are hesitant to hire veterans, from my experience.
- Politically-correct ideas are rising in the military.
- The VA does not give a sht about you or your problems, so if you get broken, have a good plan.
- Going to college while you're newly enlisted is hard to do, so don't buy into that jargon when the recruiter tells you that going to school is easy in the military.

All in all, I had the most fun times of my life while in the military. I was fortunate though as I was sent to Europe. That's not the case for many guys. But I also had some of the most depressing times also. If I could do it over again, I'd make it a career.

Being an officer isn't all it is cracked up to be. New LTs still get sht on by Captains and Majors. Officers work longer than enlisted, usually. When the E5 and below get sent home, you can bet E6 and above are still sitting there doing paperwork or listening to a brief.

I'll agree with the employment point. Bizarre and I never would have imagined but it's largely true in my experience.

How hard is it to get a computer/tech position in the Navy? What are the best locations to get stationed at?

The military sucked. Only reason I wasn't suicidal was because I got lucky and lived overseas for my whole enlistment.

Many Navy ratings (jobs) are technical. Options vary literally day to day. But if you want a specific ratings simply wait to sign the enlistment paperwork until you get it.

"Best location" depends on what you consider "best". But it really doesn't matter, because you'll have almost no control over that first assignment, and minimal control over subsequent ones.

I was stationed in Germany for 3 years and Japan for a year. I was in the Air Force as an air traffic controller.... after a couple years I HATED the job and basically had panic attacks going into work everyday.

I think a person's view of the military depends on: 1)what branch you join, 2)where you're located, 3) what job you have, and 4) how good your immediate chain of command/ coworkers are.

If any of those are bad, your time in the service is most likely going to be terrible

Huh? When do they ever let you off early for the day?

Granted there is a lot of fuk off time if you aren't actively training or getting tasked out to do something stupid. So yeah you can hang out in the barracks and play some nintendo or whatever, but you have to be there from 6AM to 6PM most days for first call/last call. If you live off post it's still pretty chitty day to day even in garrison. At least in a line arty unit.

As you are probably aware, mileage varies a lot. I experienced practically 0 of what you are describing and thats why I insist on the disclaimer of it depends on your command/rating/etc. The bad ones...they suck. Some of them end up with multiple suicides and/or people just going crazy.

Probably not that hard if you can score well on the ASVAB. I had a certain other plan in my head when I entered so I never got into any of the tech stuff. I had a business degree and stubbornly wanted to do something that would give me experience related to that for when I got out. So I went a different route. A big part of me regrets not doing one of the computer/tech type jobs you mentioned and then getting a masters in IT or CS or whatever with the experience. ITs seem to often have good jobs lined up before they get out. Long story short-it shouldnt be too hard. Score high enough on the ASVAB, which you would have to be full retard to not be able to do-that test is a joke, dont have anything that would DQ you, and be willing to wait a bit/not get pressured into accepting something else if just so happens that are no openings available the first time you go to MEPs-then you should be good.

Is it? Ive seen a lot of other veterans claiming this, and Im still on the fence. I wouldnt be surprised either way. There are a lot of firms that love to say they want to hire veterans, and there is that supposed "Veterans Preference" for Gov't jobs that a lot insist really doesnt count. I dont know if those firms that insist they are veteran friendly are just doing it for PR purposes and are full of shyt or what. I managed after getting my Masters in Accounting and 5-6 months of unemployment after that to get a low paying job at a financial firm. Seems to be good advancement/growth potential down the road though. Part of me feels like I actually kind of got lucky even for this opportunity. Such is life I guess.

The job market is just hard in general, so its hard to say.
