The same reason why trends that we shake our heads in disbelief get popularity - the excess amounts of idiot, empty life humans with internet access. The same happens in music, movies, gaming, all entertainment. People want to live vicariously rather than get outside, this is a massive market for video makers as well. That worst thing is everyone just wants the "online" fame now so we have an endless sea of cringey, copycat channels who's sole existence is ONLY for money/fame, where as before people shared videos without that being their primary goal. It shows now in the quality, half the channels even before the video starts they are begging for likes/subs "oh and visit my FB/twitter" etc etc. Nothing stays pure for long, social media really does expose the dark side of vanity and falseness.

The music industry is equally depressing. I produce music and release it in a rather niche scene. Even that niche scene has youtube curators who act as gatekeepers for the casual fans. And they exploit all the artists. So they hog internet real estate and do nothing other than curate other people's work.

Spotify is about to allow record labels the option to PAY TO ADD THEIR ARTIST'S MUSIC TO PLAYLISTS. So people like me on no budget will have yet another hurdle to leap to get our product to potential fans. The state of culture makes it depressing to even have talent. Everyone acting all ironic and sarcastic all the time, or just outraged and spouting regurgitated propaganda in line with their political cult. So when I share an album I created that does more than the top 40 billboard does combined, I'll just get hit with "Why are you showing off?" "SPAM!" "No self-promotion is allowed in this group."

The very act of creating and sharing art has been made an ugly thing. Be being a narcissistic twat who just speaks (or screams) into a camera? 1 millions subscribers. Girlfriend with huge tits that he can't even satisfy sexually. With the budget these *******s have, I'd have the next Walking Dead on my hands. And be set for life. But it's a long way to the top if you make art with substance, it seems.
