This has what to do with what I wrote? Oh, yeah, nothing. If you don't believe that Saudi Arabia is the largest sponsor of terrorism in the world and the only reason we continue to be friends with them is for access to oil then you're just willingly ignorant. Complete energy independence should be a top priority and why wouldn't you want to make clean renewables the dominant source? Let me guess, because your job will go extinct. Not to mention that Tesla still isn't even in profit yet AND he wants to go to fly to mars or some chit?

He is a scientist not a businessman. And as usual he strongly lacks a sense of scale, reality, and business sense to actually make ideas work.
Though investors/marketeers love these people so they can attract investment into it and cash out.

I think he may be more of the mind that he planted the seed, now let somebody else tend to it while he plants more seeds.

It's actually smart IMO cause in 100 years when we're all gone history books will say he helped solve this problem, that problem, so on, Vs. saying he completely solved one problem.

Keep in mind too that he's trying to solve pretty significant issues, not exactly whether Miller Lite is popular because "great taste" Vs. "less filling"

But you can't completely ignore all the good technology does for us in day to day life and just focus on the bad.

I don't think technology can even be bad unless it's good, that's to say: A worthless invention won't "catch on".

EVERYTHING has a good side and bad side ex. the sun is one of the main reason's we're here, yet may eventually kill us (if we don't kill ourselves).

You don't have to be smart to fool the government into giving you money. No one is saying he isn't smart, we're just mad that he's using tax payer money to fund his projects. If private investors aren't willing to foot the bill for his projects why should the government force the rest of us to pay for it?

That's not AI. It's not learning. It's following it's programming. The intelligence went into the program when it was written by people. All of the driving conditions you're talking about are detected with sensors and there are subroutines that analyze those inputs much more quickly than a human can, thus allowing the car to make adjustments on the brakes more quickly, according to the program already written and which is running. That's all.

In your example, true AI would be to hookup all sorts of sensors and allow the system to determine on its own which inputs are relevant and which aren't and then determine how to best use those inputs to control the brakes and achieve the best overall outcome. This doesn't really exist yet. The coding problem to be solved is massive and right now that's the only way we know how to even approach the problem. To have true AI (if we ever do), the coding size issue must be resolved first. You simply can't write and debug the hundreds of millions of lines of code that would be required to roughly approximate the capabilities of the human brain. We also don't have the hardware for that yet.

It may be programming, and part of a pre-designed code. But do you remember when Microsoft tried that whole AI chatbot twitter account? Within 24 hours it was a feminist hating, nazi. It "learned" based off of what people tweeted and talked to it about.
Now picture that but instead of it "learning" text, it mimics actions. It doesn't have to have a self learning AI for it to become dangerous. If it mimic and learns actions from people, it takes a handful of fuked up people to make it dangerous. And a robot like this isn't that far down the line. Having a safety protocol that can shut it down if anything does go wrong is essentially what the few posters were trying to say.

In the United States, the federal government has paid US$74 billion for energy subsidies to support R&D for nuclear power ($50 billion) and fossil fuels ($24 billion) from 1973 to 2003. During this same timeframe, renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency received a total of US $26 billion.

Pisseningmisc is right. Tech advances and new labor markets have allowed us to phuck things up differently and feel better about it. We know what we have to do- scale back consumption drastically. We will never do that so we look for creative fake solutions.

Solar is such a fraud, thanks Obama. Lol at all the money spent in something that is so terrible for the environment to produce and touting it as environmentally friendly. Meanwhile nuclear energy gets a bad rap because of lack of education and "Mah nukes" come on guys let's get with the program here.

This thread is full of phuking idiots

If you know anything about the guy you'd realize he doesn't care about how much money he's making he literally wants to improve humanity. When you think of the decisions he is making they're not to maximize profit. He's a little delusional yes but he's smart as hell. The reason he got government funding for SpaceX is bc their rockets finally succeeded and they're currently the only ones doing launches to space in the US at much cheaper prices. He's exposed car companies and government-funded companies like Boeing and Northrop Grumman (NASA too) for blowing unnecessary millions of dollars on outdated technology

Decent article on the issue of solar although it's a bit outdated (2014)

Meanwhile nuclear power produces far less waste and is much easier to recycle. We just need to educate the population and build new reactors that are safer and more catastrophe proof to avoid issues like in Japan.

I think it's perhaps too generalizing to subsume all these harmful outcomes with all technological endeavors. That is, to imply that technology always brings these harms is risky. I think many of these things are inherent inallkinds of technological pursuits; it doesn't necessarily mean the aims or technological intentions are not on the right (and necessary) track.

Well, what should be done? We know of global climate change, we know of pollution, we know of all the harmful effects associated with continued use of fossil fuels and coal. What should we do about that?
All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.

this thread is literally a bunch of morons..first its hyperloop not hyperlink.

Second EV may not be better for the environment in general because it still uses electricity from coal and gas but it helps prevent crowded cities from having horrible air quality. It's not exactly a strong argument but probably the only positive thing about it at the moment.
