I'm convinced the dude is just a govt poster child for all their pet projects. His companies are extremely overvalued and pumped endlessly full of cash and he is funded for any number of unrelated things that are always publicized to no end. No way he's even remotely engaged in all this stuff. They want to build him up as a knock off Nikola Tesla as a means to sell all these various initiatives.

If there's one company I'm calling undervalued even at $700.00 it's TESLA.

Probably because the return on investment for solar panels is like 20 years. Right about the life expectancy of the panels.

Electrical engineer checking in. If you invested in tesla and look at it as a vehicle to cash in and out of... that's one thing.

If you think any of Musk's products including the EVs, the "revolutionary" home battery panel, etc. are engineering marvels just lol at you.

To be fair isn't that generally the case with new conquests?

Especially undertaking something as ambitious as traveling to a new planet and potentially colonizing it.

Not only that but I suspect that if/when we eventually get to and colonize another habitable planet most humans will easily forget about a few rockets blowing up and/or people dying (srs).

Unless they're reminded of it like we have some new world holiday called something like "Pioneer Day", which will eventually just be an excuse for us to get yucky off martian beer.

The core business of Tesla is a very profitable company. However, he sold Tesla stock to fund the massive battery factory (AKA Gigafactory) that will produce all the batteries for Tesla's electric cars. The factory will also make other batteries to include cell phone batteries. Once complete in 2020 it should cut production costs for Tesla cars by 30% and increase revenues considerably. This factory will also help launch and maintain his solar company as it will produce the necessary battery banks needed to store electricity off the grid.

This romantic sentiment towards science is sometimes true, but not the case with Musk or Tesla. Electric Vehicle along with battery technology has been on the march forward for decades. Tesla vehicles is just another increment of this progress not a revolutionary product. Same is true of the rocket launches (many of which have failed miserably as well).

The core of the issue is this: yes it's a profitable business model and strong PR campaign, but what are you buying? As a fast EV, Tesla's are great vehicles although overpriced at the moment. Do they "save the planet"? Hell no, electricity still is generated, transmitted, and distributed to your house all of which result in pollution comparable to a regular vehicle.

His home battery system is just an inverter with a battery. The battery tech may have improved incrementally, but it really provides no new benefit, cost savings or lower pollution.

Again, the PR is very strong, claiming comic book technology and environmental benefits. I just wish it wasn't such a steaming load of crap.

Now it's becoming more and more commonplace, and the debate isn't over whether Bitcoins are valuable, the debate is now "how valuable"?.

It's kind of easy to disregard anything new in it's infancy and kind of dumb not to acknowledge that's how everything starts out.

Hell the internet is basically a rudimentary system for us to transmit our thoughts across the world to mass amounts of people, or maybe our first real baby step towards some form of telepathy.

LOL I'm getting too deep but the point I'm trying to make essentially "everything isn't a reality, until it actually becomes a reality", in the way many people who died before The Wright Brothers invented the airplane wouldn't be able to wrap their heads around flying machines.

It's often the case that far out, ambitious ventures have to be subsidised by the government. Many of the most important discoveries in history were made by R&D in the state sector or by companies that are propped up by public funding, because companies that survive solely on yearly profit margins cannot invest in incredibly speculative and uncertain projects which may take decades to see returns, if they even see returns at all. There's nothing new about this.

Well if he got the subsidies oil, gas, and coal got maybe he could be a fukton more profitable. You know Saudi Arabia is the biggest sponsor of terrorism worldwide but we have to keep pretending we are buddy buddies with them why? Because of their oil reserves. Wouldn't it be nice to not be dependent on a backwards nation that hates us with its every breath and wishes we were dead? If Musk's plan to power the US with solar panels in a 100x100 mile array is legit then WHO THE FUK CARES ABOUT PROFIT if it means we can be energy independent from terrorist fuks like the Saudis. If we were serious about terrorism then this should be our number one goal.

Strong this. EE degree and spent 7 years working on HEV/PHEVs/EVs. If it wasnt for the government funds and other OEMs buying his EV credits I dont think Tesla would have survived. Look at Koda, Fisker, and a few of the other start ups that quickly fizzled out.
