I have a 03 Lexus that has never had problems, bought it 2 years ago, checked CARFAX and was taken regularly to the dealer and never had problems. Ride is super smooth/comfortable, everyone always compliments on that. If that Lexus is made in Japan get it. Volkswagon/Audi most likely to leak oil, go to a used dealership and look under their cars.

I used to valet and have driven almost all of those. Go with the Lexus.

Lexus drives "smoother" in a way I can't describe. And in terms of reliability engineering, Lexus will soon be competing with airplane manufacturers:

For me, unless I could buy something in the 65k to 100k range, I'm not bothering with those ~35-50k range cars. They're not impressing anybody and its wasting money.

I would buy an Altima or Civic and call it a day until I can afford something in the aforementioned range.

oddly enough, i read once that the lexus 4.0 v8 is actually faa-certifiable as an aircraft engine since it's so robust and well-balanced

If you look up every year of the study, Porsche creeped up there steadily over the years. It does tend to fluctuate a decent bit, but Porsche has been up there (usually not this close to lexus) for a few years now. I think it's just Porsche engineering philosophy at this point, they keep finding ways to reuse, but also significantly refine so many of their components. I am a Lexus fanboy, but in a way I am more impressed with Porsche's numbers since those stats must include all the 911's and higher not just the macan/cayenne, cayman etc. meanwhile Lexus has nothing but cars that are inherently reliable (except for RCF, GSF, etc.)

yeah, that's impressive for sure. guess they've added the panamera and other new platforms too while still keeping the numbers good. suppose they have a bit of an advantage in the sense that they're working to a higher average price point, so they can afford to engineer their cars a bit better but that's ultimately irrelevant since they're still making the product right.
