"Whitewashing" history, I though the Union won? Isn't it still in history books? Did you know them personally? It just seems like the white supremasist got pissed they don't have their idols proudly erect for the world to see. You still got museums & history books.

It is absolutely whitewashing. It doesn't matter who won.

These people are trying to remove and discredit one of the greatest Americans in our history. Continuing down this path they will undoubtedly, no doubt about it, change the history books themselves. You can already see this happening. These days kids are taught so many negative things, from negative views on Columbus to negative views on the Founding Fathers. It's pure censorship. It isn't evenhanded. It isn't a fair telling of history.

As I said earlier in the thread, show both sides of Lee. Did he fight for the confederacy? Yes he did. On that same hand he was also fighting for his state, his family and his friends. Why is the focus solely on that he was fighting for the confederacy? How about we show both sides, the reality, instead of focusing on demonizing the guy.

I understand where you're coming from, but the thing is I'm not arguing that he was human and had a good/bad side, it would be stupid to think that they only had one side and that was it. But why should he have a statue if he was in the Cofederate side? They were the traitors and losers of the civil war, should we just put statues of all the losers from a the wars we fought?

The person driving the car into the crowd is an equivalent act of terror as when it happened in London.

Because it was a CIVIL war. Not a foreign war. A large amount of Americans died on both sides. It's about remembering them.

Personally I like and respect Lee because he was a great leader. He does seem to have been a good man overall. I've read a biography of him and he did plenty of good things. Even if you are completely against everything that he did during the war, which is a reasonable stance and shows your own loyalty, he did plenty of good things outside of that.

The same idea applies to the other people that I mentioned. Slavery is and was terrible. No doubt about it. But that doesn't take anything from the fact that say the Founding Fathers were great people with great ideas. Is slavery bad? Yeah. Did Jefferson own slaves? Yeah. Did Jefferson play an integral role in expanding our country and making it great? Yeah. All of those things can be true. There's no reason to focus solely on the bad parts and ignore and discredit the good parts, and vice versa of course.

History should be about reality. It should show the good. It should show the bad. It should show everything. There's no reason to whitewash it. Good people can do bad things. Bad people can do good things. There's no reason to deny that reality. Lee did plenty of good and bad. He was one of the greatest military leaders in American history, that alone warrants respect and honors in my view.

I agree with you, to be honest I don't really care if they take/leave the statue, I'm just curious of why people feel/act the way the do when things like this happen, history should't be white washed, it should just be told from both sides, raw and without sugar coating it.

Lol. And people wonder why no real problems get solved.

Maybe we should tackle this one after the economy is fixed, the inner cities are cleaned up, health care is reformed, you know, the actual issues. If these morons (on both sides) spent this energy, time and money helping their community the world would be a little better. I might even listen to their opinions. Or they could just waste it all like this.

Clearly only one side is allowed to protest anything.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda
