I like my chances in a gunfight a lot better than I like my chances with melee weapons.

Superior firepower seems like a pretty good way to negate the looters numerical advantage.

If it came down to it, game over, have to die... Getting shot/killed in a firefight >>>>> Being forced into slavery, eaten, watching family get raped etc.

Not to mention it most likely wouldn't be one good guy with a gun, but many. The good guys are just as likely to form into communities as the bad ones are to form gangs.

I don't think warbands are gonna be that big of a deal. There aren't enough guns that there could be very many of them, at least not here in Sweden which is also a pretty sparsely populated country which means there's plenty of opportunities to just go somewhere else and avoid them. If you came across them on the road you'd be fuked anyway, even if you had friends and extended family with you (unless you've got a really big posse I guess).

Assuming you lived in a secluded place somewhere in the forest the chances of a war party coming across your encampment is probably really small imo. Settlements would be so few and far between that there wouldn't be enough loot to sustain a large band of raiders for long, it just wouldn't be a viable survival strategy.

They'd have to roam the country constantly and the chance of running into prey would be small. It's just not worth the risk, it would be much smarter for them to try to set up in one location, which sensible people could then avoid. That together with the small amount of guns floating around means you're probably not gonna be very likely to ever come across one.

It's not entirely unlikely though. Densely populated areas shortly after the apocalyptic event would probably be susceptible to that kind of group. But those areas wouldn't sustain life for very long anyway, so assuming you're smart and got out quickly (which is going to be easier in an area with few guns) I think you'd be fine.

I guess it's always gonna be a risk, I just think that risk is smaller than just getting shot in the back by some ******* lurking by the road in a place where guns are abundant. Don't get me wrong, if I was here in Sweden and somehow could get my hands on a large stash of guns of course I would. It's just that I'd feel safer riding out the apocalypse here than in a heavily armed US state.

Law and order is maintained with violence. Once the initial shock wore off and people were no longer eating each other, suburban and rural communities would make their own safe enclaves.
