Depends.

1 on 1: Some sort of grappling martial art like traditional wrestling or jiujitsu

more than 1 opponent: Probably kickboxing

In average scenario, this two doesn't always go together.

You either get someone huge with very bad cardio or someone with excellent cardio but lack the size.

But the middle ground between the two are ideal.

Lots of group beat downs start off 1 on 1, last place in the world you want to be when the friends jump in is on the ground.

Your ground game is your last resort and should be avoided at all costs in a street fight. Sure its better to have it as backup than not but you want to keep things standing and to use distance to avoid getting hit.

If you are fighting 2 guys you should assume that it will be 5 within seconds, just get the hell out of there.

Thinking about this a little more you are also better off in a street fight with some body hardening conditioning.

Way back when I was still practicing we did a lot of body hardening, mostly just shins and knuckles.

We used this for breaking demos at charity events but in a street fight it is basically a weapon.

I was playing soccer in gym class when me and another kid had a vivacious shin on shin clash.

Even though he was wearing shin pads and I wasn't the other guy was the one that ended up unable to stand for several minutes while I was able to shake it off quickly.

Thinking about this in the context of a street fight there is no better way to ensure escape then removing the other guy's ability to run or even walk.
Eat in a deficit to lose weight.
Hit your protein and fat minimums to stay healthy and keep your gainz.
Lift heavy and do HIIT to look and feel awesome.
Use the internet to learn why you should do these things and how to do these things.

I personally believe boxing is the standard. Sure BJJ claims most fights end on the ground but I'll tell you this, almost all of them start standing up. Also BJJ on concrete will guarantee some pain for both fighters.

Pls respawn.
The best option for winning a street fight (You're not gonna like it)

Is to run. If I were to choose 1 and only 1 artform to help me survive, it would be parkour / free running.

If its a situation like your gf being attacked or w.e, that's different - probably best to just have a gun on you and combine it with the strategy above.

Every martial art that requires direct engagement with a lunatic on the streets has risks that could easily disable you, or get you ****ed up / dead - regardless of how good you are.

That's why i said if it's 1 on 1. It's a hypothetical situation, no need for the essay. What I say still applies

No it won't apply because what about the situation where your opponent has aids and start biting or explosively diarrhea in his pants, you gonna get tangled with him? Lol

Question though.
How many of you guys have been in an actual street fight?

I've been with 4 during my college years. I grew up in Manila in the 90s. I'm 43 now.[ul]
  • 1st - walking home at night from school and a older druggie neighbor power trip on me maybe because I was a thin 125 lbs lol. He wasn't asking for money, just bullying me until he attempted to punch me.

  • 2nd - some guy pulled my shirt from behind in an underpass. Instinct just kicked in and swung the T-Square I've been carrying everyday without even looking first and hit him in the face. He run away bleeding. (For those who's unaware, T-Square was an old drafting tool in engg used in the old days)

  • 3rd - I was riding hanging at the end of a jeepney like this:

And then someone snatched my Chicago Bulls cap (lmao). I was stupid to jumped down and chased him behind the church. He fought back, I won and drag him in the Police Precinct just in front of the church. I think one reason I was brave that time is because I live around that area. And I saved up for days to buy that $25 cap. Its a big money in the 90s and in my country.

  • Lastly, we are already working. I lost my wallet in a jeepney from a pickpocket. Screamed my lungs out for the fuker to reveal himself until he did. We saw him dropping my wallet out through the window. There's 2 of them, I was with friend from college. We beat them up and dragged to the precinct again.

  • [/ul]
My point is, of all those instances, I won because most of the people involved doesn't know sh*t about fighting. I guess they always expect their victims to just run.

My background, I was a Karate and TKD athlete playing for my school and have little judo knowledge having to take it for a semester.

A lot of times, you'll be facing someone with no experience in fighting. I merely used basic punches and kicks. I think the point is dont overthink it. As long as you have a strong basic/foundation of any martial arts, you already have an advantage against maybe 70%+ of the people you have to face. Remember, I was a 125 lbs twink and these people I face were adults in their 20s or 30s probably with no morals.

Not saying you need to be confident and always face them. Run if you have a chance, but in cases where you dont have a choice, dont think too much and complicate things, just remember the basic and do not panic. I think best weapon during this situations are keeping yourself together first.

What have you seen in real life ? Because I am guessing you have not seen a real life violent street attack , just bar fights nor have you taken a real Krav Maga class . First off , all of the disciplines you listed are encompassed in Krav Maga .

What you did have right - Krav Maga does teach you how to spot potential threats , preemptive attacks , deescalation but it is much more than that.

Krav Maga is based on the natural reaction to a threat/attack so to say that the moves you saw someone do in a video , anyone can do and thus isn't limited to Krav Maga is just pure ignorance . Krav Maga was created so that anyone , big , small , male , female , in shape or out of shape can defend themselves against attackers who know what they are doing and who don't . You say for combat it is practically useless yet it is the CQC form that the IDF uses , That Mossad uses ,that is the archetype for a lot of hand to hand systems all over the world .

You say "pressure testing" or stress drills are nearly impossible for the average Joe , Not true . Those are designed to teach you how to fight in the fray of a real life street attack , they are as close to a real life situation as you can get . I train in Krav Maga and I can tell you those stress drills are not impossible if you know what you are doing and train hard and take it seriously .

As for finding a good school , Yes that can be difficult but no impossible . The 5 major Krav Maga organizations , Krav Maga Worldwide , Krav Maga Alliance , Krav Maga Global , Krav Maga Federation and Israeli Krav Maga *Gidion System* are the main schools in the US and all the founders of those organizations have lineage tied directly to Imi Lictenfeld .

Now don't get me wrong , I know that a boxer , KB someone who trains could no doubt hold their own in a one on one unarmed fight but all of those are sport based and the experience doesn't reflect a real life encounter . Boxing , Kickboxing , MMA are all governed by rules , enforced by a ref who can stop the fight when someone can't continue .

That's really all I have to say , You are entitled to your opinion but it is based on ignorance from only learning about Krav Maga from very limited encounters/sources .

Just as I predicted, everyone who ever defended Krav Maga says it based on this and its supposed to do this. Yeah it's designed so people of all sizes and sexes can use it etc, but that's what they said about kung-fu and wingchun too so anyone can form a martial art and make similar claims.
Yeah, it's used as cqc from in Israeli army but that doesn't say much because the chance a soldier loses both his firearm, side arm, then melee weapon and has to resort to his fists are extremely minuscule. Kung-fu was used to teach to Chinese imperial army, does it argue that its effective?
Yeah pressure testing is impossible to do realistically in Krav Maga, because their practice and sparring completely remove the element of fear and adrenaline. I don't care how many time you drilled with a plastic knife with your classmate you ain't gonna flex your bull**** if someone comes at you with a real knife with a full intent to kill you. No martial art in the world can sufficiently defend an unarmed person from a knife or gun attack, it's unrealistic and unlike Krav Maga other martial arts don't have this pretension.
And lol at that sports have rules fallacy. You don't become super human because you fight in the street. Don't mistake yourself, if a trained fighter can crush you in a ring have no doubt he can annihilate you in the street as well, and this time no referee will stop him from hurting you badly.

I'll second this post with the addition of the following:
-Whatever martial art gives you some degree of confidence and situational awareness goes farther than the techniques themselves. Unless it is personal, the perpetrators are looking for an easy target.
    -Run
-A few solid strikes, joint locks, and the ability to take a strike.
    -Run
-Athletic conditioning to be able to stay engaged for 2 minutes, the average statistical time of an altercation.
    -Run.

You can practice with a real knife or a real gun or a fuking nuclear Bomb but if the other guy isn't actively trying to bring you down you're not simulating a real situation. Period.
Also you referenced that same video the last time we had this discussion, the krav maga guy is obviously more fit and stronger, neither quality is exclusive to krav maga training. He's doing what every gas station clerks who had fended off robbers on YouTube had done, and they didnt need to pay for krav maga training to do it. A boxer who isn't afraid to scrap would have knocked that knife wielding dude out in the first exchange, as proven by many new articles detailing ex boxers delivering a world of hurt to armed burglars.

And no I don't take krav maga because I'm self aware of its efficacy. My first gym was krav/bjj/muay thai, and every day I see the krav guys doing the most ridiculous chit. I've been in enougbfights and heavy sparring to know how difficult it is to eyepoke, groin strike a resisting opponent. If you can't punch someone in the square in the face how do you have the speed or accuracy to even touch their eyes. For the average person krav maga is a game of make believe.

Krav Maga is the only answer here of course it depends on whether or not you have an actually coherent instructor/gym

Lol...he is 35 and would f#cken drop a boxer or MMA within 5 seconds....no contest.I have been in enough fights in my life, against trained and untrained people,to know that.
I am under no illusion or delusion as to what a good fighter is. Especially since we train MMA twice a week in a class situation, with Sifu instructing.

Is there a Sifu here at all?? As I asked before, have you actually trained with a Sifu at all?? How often do you train with an actual Master??

The extensive evidence on youtube would indicate otherwise.

I am going to make a bold prediction here:

Your master has 0 vids on youtube or other vid platform.

    BTW....

BTW Only vids he has are training vids for students.Henry Sue has plenty AFAIK.

That's some serious clown chit hahaha.

If your super mystical martial art can't succeed in the octagon against other martial arts in a video recorded competition, it's a bullchit martial art. If your martial art depends on "super deadly techniques" that can somehow be done on the street but not in the cage, you're a fukking idiot. Eye gouges and ball strikes are HARDER to pull off than punching someone in the face or leg kicks. This ninja garbage doesn't hold up against MMA, so hate to break it to you Steven Seagal watching old farts that the teched up bros that train muay thai and BJJ for years can fuk up your wannabe samurai honorable warrior garbage mythos.

Lol....you have no idea the power those red belts are capable of. Holding back in a training vid does not show it.

    Have a nice day guys.

Haha a Praying Mantis Kung Fu Sifu is teaching you MMA? I got a new flash for you that crap doesn’t work in real life. Especially the form praying mantis which is one of the even less effective forms. I have trained in boxing/Muay Thai since I was 15.5, I wrestled for a few seasons in school, I trained in no gi BJJ for two years, I’ve also trained in tradional martial arts such as Kenpo, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and Praying Mantis. All of the tradional Asian martial arts I mentioned are not practical in real life situations. Real fights are way to fast paced and unpredictable for those martial arts to work in a full speed aggressive fight. Tae Kwon Do can actually teach you some good kicks and flexibility but that’s it.

Most of those traditional arts places are able to make things look good in practice but can’t actually execute it in a real situation. They expect people to react certain ways to form chain moves when in reality people don’t react like that. They don’t usually actively spar like boxers and mma fighters do. They aren’t as strict on strength and conditioning. Boxers and MMA fighters are actually athletes. They are in tremendous shape, strong, explosive, and actively sparring other good fighters.

In a real situation take a “high level” Sifu in Praying Mantis or Kenpo Sensei against a professional boxer/kickboxer in a street fight and the boxer will usually drop them within the first couple combinations they threw. Their hands are too fast to be H blocked or trapped. They aren’t a stationary target they cut angles the move after every combo. Their heads are moving. They are feinting punches and stokes in general to be unpredictable. They are changing levels. They hit hard and they are used to getting hit by people who are experts at hitting. They are also almost always going to be more athletic and better conditioned. Pretty much same scanerio against a MMA fighter only they would probably strike a little bit before taking the Tradional martial artist down and smashing his face with punches and elbows, or putting him into a submission.

I've boxed for years, used to wrestle in high school and would love to learn judo, so I'm going with boxing and wrestling/judo.
