I've bought this, but you don't usually buy the freehold as you don't own the land the apartment is on (unlike a house). So I've effectively bought the lease to the flat for the next 160 years. Just like paying 160 years rent in advance
This has made it even more confusing. so they take 6 months of rent annually and multiply it by 160 years? So say your rent is 1,200 per month x 6 x 160? You paid over a million dollars for that flat? Or am I way the fuk off?

So is this what you UK brahs refer to as a Leasehold?

If so then Non UK Brahs....it sounds like the difference is that this is a long term apartment arrangement, without the perks of an apartment arrangement. You have condo responsibilities in an apartment. The Landlord appears to only have an obligation to get you started on the good foot. As long as the property is good to go and functionally acceptable upon the beginning of the lease period, the Landlord is absolved of responsibility moving forward. The old Mitch Hedberg joke "Fook Home Depot....I went to the Apartment Depot. It was a whole bunch of people standing around say 'We don't gotta fix chit!'" isn't applicable. Upkeep, repairs etc are the responsibility of the tenant, not the Landlord. All property ownership rights are the landlords, and an active lease cannot prevent eviction. Sounds like if the landlord decides he doesn't want the property anymore, he can sell the unit and evict the tenant.

Stay safe op.

Let’s try and explain this a bit more.
OP owns the right to do as he pleases in the apartment as part of his lease. The lease will include a service charge payable to the building management company which will cover upkeep of the external areas such as the car park, the external fabric of the building and the internal corridors, and probably internal services (water, electric, phone etc) up until the point they enter the unit. It may also cover things such as window replacement so that the building maintains a uniform look in years to come.
OP is responsible for everything inside the unit and the upkeep of them (kitchen/bathroom fittings, doors etc)
The advantage as OP has said is cost. No price mentioned but say it was £120k (likely near me) and he put 10% down he will be paying something like £400 a month at a guess (looking at mortgages atm myself) the apartment would rent out for £600 per month at least near me. So even when you factor in the service charge, it’s still cheaper than renting.

Basically all of this. My service charge is a lot because of the electric gates and lift amongst other things

No it's definitely not like that lol

In theory we all have the same 160 year lease and could be kicked out at the end, however we also have the right to extend that lease at any point, or indeed buy the freehold to the land (same as a house)

Took till this post to educate the foreign plebs ITT.

Also the rent in or near London is extreme and you can afford a 4-5 bed house with ease in areas of the Midlands, North, NE and NW for those prices.

probably about 10% cheaper initially, which will rise and fall with the property market. I'm not advising other miscers to do the same thing right now, it's not a great time to buy, not much choice of apartments if you want to be near or in London.

I'll be honest, it is pretty poverty. Not done up nicely, quite small. Needs some $ spent on it.

No sorry didn't explain it well. Most people would rent places like this off an absentee owner landlord, they would usually sign a lease agreement for a few months at a time after which they can be booted out. Eventually I will rent this out and retire somewhere cheaper.

So you're going to use it as a rental property essentially?

Congratulations property is always a good investment must have cost quite a lot that near to London. Renovate it and I am sure value will raise quite a bit.
