Watermelon, the blandest of all fruits is now triggering grown men. Even if he had brought fried chicken with that watermelon, I'd just say thanks and eat the damn thing. WTF does it matter if someone is racist if they're not hindering you?

Considering it's aFireStation I consider bringing awatermelon a pretty funny joke. But even if it was, they'd still see no humour in it.

What kind of a world do we live in where someone can't be a life saver because they brought in a certain fruit? Also by even being offended you feed the stereotype. A non racist world would be "Oh cool, a watermelon how refreshing. Let's tuck in!".

I think the intention was obviously as a joke, not to be racist. It's definitely a bold move to bring a watermelon in, it can go good or horribly wrong. I just think people are way too sensitive nowadays. The intention is obvious but people just don't care anymore.

It could matter that someone is racist against you if schit hits the fan in your line of work. Not that I agree with the guy's firing. It very well could have been an innocuous gesture by him, and I think you need more to go on before making a decision to fire him and impacting his livelihood in such a profound way.

Well yeah, but you'd probably want to get rid of someone like that before they had the chance to hinder you. You wouldn't wait for them to hinder you to make that decision, but go by a reasonable expectation for potential to hinder. That said, the station didn't give the guy a fair chance to determine the potential for hindrance, and now look like a bunch of triggered crybabies over what very well could have been an innocuous gesture.

This is probably just semantics at this point.

I had a black friend in high school (still friends with but he lives in another state now) that would devour watermelon when we had it at our house.... people nowadays are just way too sensitive.
