Personally, I think the boards were shut down because the movie industry didn't like the fact that audiences could have such a free exchange of discussions about movies and things like actors. Might have been political. The shutting down of the boards occurred during a time when the whole female Ghostbuster debacle occurred. And anybody who frequented the boards knows, there were a lot of political talks regarding current events and even about actors/actresses. Imagine if the boards were still around during all this wave of sexual harassment allegations. I'm not saying Hollywood itself forced IMDB to shut down the boards, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did considering how popular it was for the site.
