The cop is at fault here, or possibly the department for lack of training which is evident.

What's with having the guy crawl towards you? Way too much hand movement. Poor guy was executed.


The proper way to handle it would be

1.face away from me hands laced behind your head.

2.when I tell you walk backwards slowly

3. Then when he was in a safe range have him go to his knees while keeping his hands behind his head... then cross his feet. He is still facing away so he won't see you coming. The whole time his hands will Be behind his head. No hand or arm movement.


The confusing set of directions followed by a super unsafe crawl is what did this kid in. The crawl is high risk for the officer because the suspect can see you and hand movement is too unpredictable.

Believe me, lots of small (physically and mentally) tough-guy attitude wannabe cops in Law Enforcement nowadays. Recruiters often do a piss poor job at spotting decent candidates. They are often under pressure to recruit, hence why PDs are full of fuking morons.

What a horrendously handled situation. I'm usually very sympathetic towards cops who have to react in split-second timing to a potential threat, but this is just beyond words. How on earth did they expect a potentially intoxicated person to follow their convoluted instructions to the letter, while fearing for his life and in a state of shock and confusion...pretty much a death sentence.

I'm not familiar with all the facets of police training in the US, so feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but to me it would have made much more sense to keep the suspect in one place, keep the gun pointed at him and have the other officer cuff him while his hands were raised in the air. If the suspect moved or flinched as the second officer was approaching him, then it would have been justified to shoot him. Or better yet, keep the gun pointed at him while the other officer calls for backup and then have the additional officers restrain the suspect when they arrive.

The majority of people responding are doing so in hindsight, a luxury the officer didn't have when he saw the guy reach for the small of his back, after being told numerous times not to, when responding to a sighting of a gunman pointing his weapon at people out of a window.

All of the people asking why they don't go up to him are idiots.

They can't without exposing themselves to the alcove leading to the room. They also can't cover the door to the alcove while an officer moves up to arrest.

well, the kid did reach while crawling, that is fact. And this was after he previously put his hands behind his back and was told not reach behind his back again or he will get shot.


That said... You can't walk to where they are because they just came around the corner and you don't know what is there, but the way they handled the situation by making some one crawl towards you is retarded, a simple hands in the air and walk backwards to the sound of my voice is how I was trained which I find sufficient, and a lot easier directions to follow for some one who is drunk and ****ting their pants.

Cop giving the instructions is the one at fault imo, those instructions he was yelling out were confusing enough to me as some no one not drunk with a gun pointed at me. When you are responding to a weapons call and some ones hands keep going behind there back you have to take that as a serious threat, there are way more cop videos out there were a cop looses his life because he warns a guy not to reach behind him to many times only to end up getting shot. From my understanding it wasn't the officer who shot that was yelling instructions.
