Do you really think the marriage rate will plummet and the people that profit from marriage will just say "oh well, it was good while it lasted". Fuk no, they will find ways to attack whatever replaces legal marriage.

Also having children out of wedlock puts you at the mercy of the courts' custody and Child Support laws which we all know typically favour mothers
Between that ^, cohabitation and no-fault divorce, it really just looks like relationships between men and women are attacked from ALL angles

I haven't read through all the responses so it has probably already been said but sticking it out for 20 years most of the time has to do with kids. I would say that I would definitely stay in an unhappy marriage for my daughter. I couldn't imagine only seeing her every other weekend. I know that sounds like being a cuck but my daughter means more than anything in this life. In this case with the woman splitting it off maybe she wanted the kids to have their father in their life until they were grown.

I swear to god all the people who I know got divorced, it always seems like 9/10 times it was the wife who initiated the divorce first, while the guy tries to work it out, esp when a child is involved.
It has to be a midlife crisis thing. Men buy nice cars and chit when they are going through it, while woman will cheat on their husbands, get divorced, get a boob job and find a new boyfriend "who really cares about her".
Being married and getting divorced after 20+ years is scary and it always seems like the woman will bonce back on her feet faster because she will get alimony and find a new provider while the guy is stuck in a 1 person apartment, broke, mentally destroyed and wishing his life was over.
It reminds me of all those times I have asked a co worker why he is broke if he's getting paid great money and the first words out of their mouth is usually alimony or child support, followed by a deep sigh.

Lawyers for separation
- Gov collects taxes from services provided + taxes paid from Lawyer's salary
Division of Real Estate / Assets
- Realtors get paid; Gov collects tax on sale of real estate/assets + taxes paid from Realtor's Salary + Taxes collected from Lawyer's for providing related services
The, now ex-husband, is required to work even more to be able to pay alimony/child support or it's jail time for him
- Once again government is collecting more money due to his increased work load
Why would the gov want to overhaul this? and these were just examples I came up with on the spot. If you're not the wife/gov in this scenario, there's just no winning

Get people to think that sticking it out in a marriage has benefits over divorcing at the first opportunity because this new guy makes a little more money and enjoys tennis which her husband isn't too terribly fond of. 100% of the women I've known and heard about, who go the route of hedonism and chasing the "better" option being the sole reason she wanted a divorce, wind up miserable later on.Not really. We just need the legal aspects of marriage to go away (hospital visitation, filing taxes together, honestly there's not much else). Make it so you can sign a form to do those things with anyone (side effect: gay marriage dispute disappears). Then leave marriage as it always was: a religious/personal institution that has nothing to do with the government.
It's like the marshmallow experiment. Teach people to think that sticking it out and trying to get the situation to improve is better than snatching the marshmallow (getting a separation) and calling it a day. Maybe it's a weird analogy but it works in my head.

Prenups still have to be reasonable. They can be voided pretty easily.
Tons of grey area in family law though.
It sounds like the longer your spouse stays out of the work force, the more alimony you'll be expected to pay because they'll be less employable.

If you were only married a short time and didn't have any children you might be sweet.
But if you were together over 10 years and have kids together maybe not.
Alimony isn't what it used to be. In most states it isn't permanent, only for a few years. And some states don't have it at all.
Most places actually don't even call it alimony anymore, but spousal support and the idea is to provide support for a transition period so that the lower income spouse can get stabilized.

On a serious note; If you get married at 25 and your wife leaves you at 45..... you lucked out. You got to enjoy that prime piece of pussy for 20 years and now you can trade her in for another 25 year old.

people change over time but that isn't the problem.
The problem is the US Divorce Courts. We have the worse divorce court system in the world.
I saw a document about the US Divorce Courts 3 months ago and I'm still in shocked on how unregulated and fukked up it all is.
Other countries have very civil divorce courts and can cost less than $1k in fees. Everybody is happy and go on their way. Kids don't get dragged through the mud.
The current system in place enables women to get greedy and use this against men.
It is insane.

It's a weird statistic that women are the ones to initiate divorce more than men.
Here we have a 45 year old woman and a similarly aged man. His sexual market value is likely way higher than hers. Men are biologically driven to mate with younger women (functioning sperm for life) as they age, but women lose fertility.
I guess the fact she gets alimony forced by the state, makes all the difference. In a free market without this, I imagine women would have far less incentive to divorce at an older age.
