Finally watched it and surprised at how disappointing I found it. After a very unoriginal but still enjoyable The Force Awakens, I thought this would be the film to really make this trilogy its own and really pull me back into the universe but I just found it so uninspiring. Some many forced characters and stupid plot points, I actually enjoyed The Force Awakens more. And the villains. Jeez.

Going from arguably the most iconic villain of all time in Darth Vader to Snoke who was absolute chit and an emotional teenager.

I liked Finn in the first film but he was absolutely wasted in this film. Agree with the person above who says he should have been more trained when he first joined, would have given them more scope to improve his character rather than have him on a stupid mission with some random character

And imagine getting an actor as good as Benicio Del Toro and then wasting him like that.

There were so many other things wrong with it as well. Luke not dying and then dying? The lady on a suicide mission deciding to finally do something after more than half the ships have been destroyed? he forced jokes, especially in serious moments ruining any tension?

Only thing I will say is I never really found Daisy Ridley that attractive but she looked good in this film.

They've left themselves a lot to do in the last film. I barely feel like the story has started
I agree with every single point. And Daisy Ridley - I remember in TFA I thought "this girl looks phuckin weird" but was kinda drawn to her because of her acting enthusiasm. She's a bright spot in the new trilogy.

There was the scene in TLJ where she's being transported to kylo in that container thing and she looked cute. She's got an odd smile though.

The entire point of this film was to destroy the legacy that was created in the original trilogy. They literally burned it down for any who was too thick not to realize they'd corrupted Luke Skywalker to serve their despicable agenda.

From the review of an SJW:
The Force doesn’t really care who you are. Nobody is the chosen one. Concepts like Destiny and Mysticism are hubris. Legends are problematic. The cycle of the empire vs the rebellion repeats in the first order vs the resistance and the ideologies of both sides are inherently flawed. It’s a machine. And the only way to be free is not to join. The past must be destroyed. The Jedi must end. We have to stop fighting what we hate and start saving what we love.

My favorite scene in the entire film is when Luke takes a torch to the Jedi Tree because he’s going to finally burn it all down. He’s going to burn the Jedi texts and end it. Then he hesitates. So Yoda appears as a force ghosts and does it for him. Yoda basically tells Luke to stop being so dramatic. Even in his attempt to hide from the past and close himself off from the Force, Luke is deifying the Jedi order. And Yoda tells him straight. None of this is really important. And then in a sublime moment commiserates with this former padawan by reminding him that when you’re a teacher, you’re agreeing to be the thing that your students move beyond. You get left behind, that’s part of the deal. Woof!

I mean, how great is that moment?

So yeah, when a movie takes the concepts that have been central to Star Wars and tears them down some people are going to react badly. I get that.

But God, how I loved it.

Good. burn it down.

Also, I can't figure out why they would write something like this trilogy as off the cuff, each one relying on the previous movie to move forward? I get that the directors should have say in what goes into their movie, but are there no major plot points mapped out ahead of time? No one knows what will be in 9 and I think it's very odd to not have a road map for something like this.

That quote was so disgusting.

And yeah I agree, they fabricated this dispicable story about Luke being a broken outcast and reversed Han's entire growth from a selfish kunt to a self-sacrificing hero who'd give it all up for the people he loves. Han ends up abandoning his family to become a pirate/smuggler? God Damnit Disney.

They did all this chit because they knew people loved the original heros so much, that in order to get people interested in the new ones, they had to make the old cast look like pure chit. They sacrificed these great characters so that people can feel sorry for these dumb new kids instead of putting an effort into making the new cast stand on their own merits.

Apparently they filmed Luke getting exhausted and filmed a secret scene with a body double, Mark didn't know until the premier that he'd been killed off

it certainly explains this bit, filmed right after the premier

I thought the Force Awakens was a decent comeback for the Star Wars franchise and really liked Rogue One, although it was slow moving in the beginning. The Last Jedi is probably the most underwhelming Star Wars movie I've ever seen. I think I even enjoyed the prequels more than this movie despite the bad CGI and cringy dialogue. The whole movie just seemed uneventful to me, like it all could've fit into an episode or 2 of the Clone Wars tv show. The plot didn't fit the scope of a 2.5 hour cinematic release. I think part of the problem is that they're giving the directors way too much free reign with the plot of the movies.

I feel like this film was just a giant middle finger to the original trilogy and the fans. What they did with Luke's character is just insulting, to the fans and Mark Hamill. The whole theme about letting the past die seemed completely aimed at longtime fans.

*Some Spoilers Ahead*

Also what's bothering me are all the articles on news sites aimed at why the fans are wrong for disliking the film and why it's actually the best Star Wars ever. Are writers and critics really THIS disconnected from things? There's so many reasons I could list as to why it's a bad film (Zombie Leia, the slow chase, Luke's character, none of the questions from TFA being answered, Poe/Holdo, Canto Bight, the political themes, Vegan Chewie, Luke's death...etc etc). I've never really been a believer in companies paying reviewers for positive reviews, but damn, this is really challenging my stance on that.

Here's what I'm going to do: just go back to believing and following the old EU and completely disregard the new content. Hello Grand Master Luke!

Also, I feel awful after seeing that clip of Mark Hamill. I know he does some voice acting and is well known for that, but Mark Hamill will always be Luke Skywalker. That is his identity to most of the world. And they took his character, made him act completely out of character, said "**** you, you're old so you're irrelevant" and ended him. So disrespectful to Hamill, the fans and Luke as a character.

I enjoyed the film but damn, not telling Hammil his crowning career role was being killed off until he sees it is pretty low imo. I guess they were worried about his reaction if told during/before shooting.

Gonna be pissed if he appears as a ghost in IX.
