I honestly don't buy into btc having to stay around as a proof of concept. When it went from nothing to 1 dollar it was proven.
I honestly see it hovering around like a bad fsrt before being forgot about for better smelling farts

Also it sometimes vaguely seems that maybe people misinterpret "cap" as max limit on the market, so if the supply increases then the price would have to decrease to stay under the "cap." But cap is just short for capitalization.
But I'm no expert so maybe I'm misunderstanding some of this myself. To me it's just supply times price but I get confused sometimes by other comments and then I wonder if I'm missing something.

Its hard to talk about because every coin will have more than 1 buyer, so its moot
But theres no way in hell a holder can dictate price. Only in the sense that you could lock up supply based on the original price

Youd only have 20 if someone came in and bought whatever amount necessary for that.youre still talking about supply and price
Whats interesting. And im not really sure how its decided.. Is when these coins first sell by the dev teams. How they dictate the price originally. I guess they can arbitrarily decide how much their coin will originally sell for

Old Market Cap = $100
New Market Cap = $200
New money in market = only $20
Same example, except I have 1 coin but there are 99 long term holders.
Old Market Cap = $1,000
New Market Cap = $2,000
New money = only $20
Don't mean to be bugging you m8, just trying to show that new money inflows can cause massive differences in the market cap.
Market cap to money inflows is not 1:1
I don't know if we can work out the real inflows / outflows by looking at market cap.

The current price is dictated by the supply and the ico price. The devs set ico price, and have a finite supply. You exchange $ for a portion of the finite supply and the price rises.
Another thing is im pretty sure btc dev team can make things more expensive. I am not quite sure how this works out; for example bitcoin "halving" and miner difficulty increasing. I am not quite sure how that dictates things.. Whereby btc could just increase difficulty and become more expensive. I have asked and never found an answer

As much as everyone points to manipulation after a coin crashes, here's some food for thought. Notice how on popular exchanges, during peak volume/traffic, transactions are disabled. Happened to BTC, LTC, BCH, ETH at various and/or multiple times this year. Hasn't happened to XRP yet but it's gained so much volume in the last few weeks. Chew on that a little.

Real world example. Positive earnings news for stocks adjust market participants sentiment and you have gaps in price the next morning because traders adjust their expectations on value. Expectations of what something is worth sets price, not money flows.
The same thing happens in forex, commodities, stocks and cryptos is no exception.
You CANNOT tell the amount of net money flowing into and out of stocks, commodities, forex or cyrptos by looking at the market cap.

In this example the only reason the price would rise is, even if its as you said - there was an expectation the price would rise - is if someone paid more for it. In which case, the marketcap would rise.
People would expect it to be worth more so in anticipation spend more to acquire more of it.
Not like the price would rise in anticipation; its because an actual transaction occured where someone overpaid increasing the price.
Throughout all of this.. What is your point. Price is more important than marketcap? you seem to argue price is adjusted through an arbitrary means.
Im not too tired of talking about it but im slightly annoyed
