Looking at the USD value is not that useful, because you're not buying/selling alts using USD directly. Measuring against BTC and ETH is essentially a way of determining whether you're beating the overall market or not. The overall market is growing, but it fluctuates up and down while it does so. Say you bought an alt at $1 during a market low, and then sold it at $1 at a market high. It may look like you broke even, but if the market as a whole grew and your alt stayed the same, you actually lost compared to the market.

I got in TRX at 7 cents. As long as I'm in the green, I have no reason to sell.
For today, I'm still blown away I was able to sell ETN at 3x gains randomly.
