I'm really rubbish in situations like that, I kind of freeze and can't think of anything smart to say back until later after it happened. I think it's due to the bullying at school because my mates often say how quick witted I can be when we talk trash to each other. What also happens due to the bullying at school is I become very aggressive and if what had happened to you had happened to me I would have bounced his head off the walls. My psychologist who Iam seeing for my anti social and borderline personality disorders and complex ptsd calls it 'overcompensation'. Iam basically that kind of idiots worst nightmare. Luckily it hardly ever happens now in part due to the gym but I also think I give off an aura of being a bit of a psycho so idiots like him leave me alone these days.
There aren't any real answers to dealing with people like that. One day he will say it to the wrong person though if he doesn't grow up and end up badly hurt or his friends will realise what an idiot he is and basically stop wanting to hang round with him as they grow up.
