If you think the kids are identical you are very very very mistaken. I have lived in Italy for 10 years, 5 in the balkans, and spent quite a bit of time with germans and they are nowhere near as consumer oriented/subjectivist. In fact they have more decentralized, monocultural, communities that promote collectivism.

The size of the U.S. and the intermingling of different cultures would no doubt increase variance/risk. People don't seem to understand that size alone exponentially increases the overall management of a complex system.

But Columbine also shows how hard it is to prevent dirtbags from doing sick things with ample planning and motivation. Their original plan was to blow up propane bombs in the cafeteria . . . killing most people that way and shooting at the kids as they ran away to kill more. Fortunately, the bombs didn't work very well. So they had to change their plan. They also acquired their guns illegally.

lol at the thread title.

anyhoo, for everyone asking "how did this mentally ill kid legally buy a gun?"

-You have to be adjudicated by a court as being mentally ill in order to be declared a prohibited person. In other words, you get your day in court and get to present a defense.

For everyone saying "but Trump made it legal for crazy ppl to buy guns omg!"

-Trump reversed an EO that obama wrote on his way out the door. obama made it so basically anyone can say that so-so is crazy and then that person could lose all gun rights with no appeal or due process.

That's exactly the point. If you're unwilling to compromise then that's your prerogative. End of discussion I guess.

Didn't he have mental health history? I don't know tbh. But there have been massacres in the past where the perpetrator has had significant history. So what would it do? It would have prevented many deaths.

The reason people ITT refuse to give specifics and keep things as vague as possible and just want to "DO SOMETHING!" is because they don't want to admit what their actual end state is. They want near total disarmament such as Australia, and for it to be illegal to even use a firearm for defensive purposes even when your life is being threatened, just like Australia. They realize admitting this sounds terrible, so they keep weaseling out of saying it. Anything short of total bans wont even begin to stop mass shootings. Obama even mentioned Australia gun laws as something to emulate, so it's not like this isn't a popular position being advocated under 'common sense'.

Note also that they keep going back to the big bad scary AR-15, despite mass shootings like Virginia Tech where a standard pistol and a target pistol were able to kill vastly more people than in Florida.

Love how Gun Liberals and Gun Nuts have no slide..its just both 1 extreme or the other.

Gun Liberals : Ban all guns guns are scary

Gun Nuts: we need MORE AR's.

Find a common ground. I'm a firearms enthusiast but the gun regulations in America are awful at best. Make it harder to obtain and less accessible( Similar to Canada, You can own an AR here but we don't have the school shootings per capita america has)

Better education, stricter application process and back ground checks.

FBI didn't do chit. School didn't do chit. FBI was informed and the school knew he was a huge security risk. If the FBI weren't so focused on buying fake dossiers from foreign intelligence agents to frame a duly elected US president, maybe they would have done their f-cking jobs and prevented this.

How exactly would they do that? He legally bought a gun. Do you want them to start arresting people because they MIGHT be threats?

If you understand that it is NOT a compromise to just take away Rights, maybe don't call it what it is not.

Why do you say there are "simple enough solutions" when you admit you cannot put forth a workable solution?

He is saying they should have done a little more digging and investigating based on what was out there...hell maybe they could interview the guy...maybe the result of that would have been making it so he couldnt' buy from an FFL.

This is not the first time a mass shooter or terrorist had been pinged by the FBI and they didn't act, either.

This kid should not have been able to own a gun, you deserve to lose that right when you go around saying the kind of **** he was saying. My question is what failed here, the framework of Florida's gun laws, or the process? Are there measures in place to have prevented someone like him from getting a gun that just were not followed, or, by law, did he have the right to own a gun? If it's the former, how do you even fix that? More/stricter laws won't make the people responsible for carrying them out any more competent.

Second time you've said that, despite me putting forth several. If by "workable" you mean "fits all your personal political criteria and beliefs" then maybe they aren't "workable". But that's your fault, not mine.

There are solutions, that a lot of people would consider reasonable, but you don't. It's as simple as that.

What is "more strict" ? If you have never been arrested or have record you have nothing. Is everyone supposed to have some government agent interview them, and go talk to their friends and family going back years?
