DYEL? Floor pumps are actually pretty high volume so it's not bad. Now if you had to use a portable bike pump that would suck. Now if I had to seat a tubeless tire then I'd opt for a compressor.

gonna try riding some road/cyclocross bikes.

logic usually suggest hybrids but i am reading about cyclocross bikes and they seem to offer best ...drop bars with sturdies tires.

i feel i am gonna regret not getting drop bars within 3 months of riding flat bars.

i have extensive 2 wheeler riding experience handling is not an issue...getting bored of riding is main issue.


whats funny is it took my much lesser research to buy my motorbike but taking so much reading to get a bicycle.

How do you think hybrids/cross bikes came to be? The geometry of a specific bike is fixed, but other than that you can mix and match components and parts to your heart desire. Frame limitations notwithstanding.

My hybrid for example, leans more towards a road bike configuration while others come with mountain bike components. It all depends on your riding, e.g. terrain, surface, time, etc.

So you can buy them already configured or at any point along the curve that fits. Alternately you can create your own configuration to suit your unique riding style.

I understand your indecision. I was at the same point just a few years ago when I wanted to upgrade my old bike. Didn't want to bite off more than I could chew, but didn't want to limit myself either.

I could have gone full road, but it would have cost twice as much, but only given me a few percent more usability. Until I'm willing to pay a lot more for a bike, I'm satisfied with my choice.

The roadie wheel went completely out of true when I lost the spoke. Went out of true badly again today but I don't think I lost any spoke this time. Maybe need to re-lace the wheel from scratch.

Sounds like you just need to try drop bars and thin tires.

Bikes can be intimidating and scary, you don't get over intimidating and scary things by avoiding them altogether.

I'd also get a cyclocross or gravel bike if I wanted to have one bike for all tasks.

i am wondering if a flat/riser bar hybrid with a more road bike geometry and thinner tires and adding bar ends would offer me great performance for occasional longer distance riding outside suburbs? by performance i mean good pickups & riding comfort.

i noticed that bikers mainly use hoods or bullhorn style grip for power cycling and bar ends on flat bar kinda give same style of grip with slightly wider stance.

yup...but i did lot of research and any decent road bike is out of my budget for this year...i can spend max $700 including basic attachments..my initial budget was $400 but i realised most sub $500 bikes really lacked good quality parts

You should keep in mind that when all is said and done that a bike is a bike. Similar to a car when its used as transportation. It doesn't matter if its a Honda Civic or a Bentley Flying Spur either way you will get from A to B just the same. Just first lean to enjoy the sport. You can always upgrade in time.

Could anybody thats familiar with this bike give me some info on it? I contacted the seller but they havent answered yet. The only thing i know about is what the pics tell me and that its a Cannondale Synapse with an Ultegra Groupset. I looked it up and some are carbon and some are/were alloy (older models, looks like all the new ones are all carbon), so if anybody recognizes this model could you link me or give me some info on it? Year, specific model, material, etc, etc.

Craigslist is awesome for used bikes. I got my vintage road bike off craigslist, and a mountain bike several years ago. My gf got a smoking deal on a road bike off craigslist recently. The challenge of buying used is that you need to be a good mechanic and have pretty good knowledge of bikes in general to buy used.

Finally got a 40 miler in today. Flawless weather. Sped up my tan process today with our sun.

I tuned in my rear wheel today and the ride quality was INSANELY different. Felt like a completely different bike. Silky smooth and fast. I can't explain it, just way better.

I managed a one hour ride yesterday in 45F weather and 4 hours later had 3-4" of snow fall quickly! The warmer temps has resulted in NO snow on my driveway and hopefully little-to-no snow on the streets as I head in to work in a few minutes.

The moving of the clocks forward an hour means extra time after work to ride, so my mileage/week should go up significantly.

what kind of brakes do u have? and how do u manage to work them in snow?

never ridden in snow but planning to one day out of need

Hey guys I will rep for good replies,

I'm looking at a 2015 Jamis Ventura Road bike. The guy is offering it to me for $500.00

Anyways, Im not a huge road biker and I was looking at hybrid bikes, I want to do a lot of road/path riding this summer.

did a 22mile, 5 hr loop in the gwnf (virginia). 4339ft of elevation!

ran out of food with about a hour left of riding, legit thought branches, tree bark and grass looked tasty.... the fukin human mind. it was a suckfest almost the entire time but it was extremely rewarding.

I have caliper brakes, but the snow fell a few hours after I returned home. I've never ridden in the snow.

I drove through WEST Virginia a couple of years ago, and the hills there were incredible!!! Sounds like you were on some similar terrain.

you don't know what you like just yet. You'll learn. Get something that appeals to you, that when you ride it, it puts a smile on your face. Then worry about upgrading to a new bike next year once you know better what you want. I spent my entire first 12 months of riding absolutely annihilating a Trek 820 (about $260 back when I got it), and I loved it, but I'm glad I went with it because I learned a variety of things about what I liked and what I didn't like and I was much better set for my next purchase

yep. Best "one-quiver" type of road(ish) bike going, is a "gravelcross" bike. Fast enough for keeping up with the roadies, but you can still put wider tires and get some off-road work in

tl;dr version - it's one of the best bikes in the business

longer version - checked Cannondale's bike catalogs going back to 2009 and couldn't find that paint scheme at all but Cannondale is known to add color schemes during the course of a single season. If it came with Ultegra, it's almost definitely carbon, as the alloy Synapse historically tops out at a 105 groupset. However, it could've come with something lesser and then the guy upgraded to Ultegra. I don't know how long ago you asked for a response, but if the guy isn't local to you, I'd do some searching to see if he has an online presence at all. If you're going to spend $$$, then snoop.

As for the Synapse, it is an "endurance road geometry" bike. It has a bit more upright of a riding position than a "racier" bike, like a Supersix (or a Specialized Tarmac, for example). It's still a super-fast, super high quality race bike, but the geometry is a bit more relaxed so it'll be a lot more comfortable to ride, especially longer distances. That's the primary difference in intent between the Synapse vs. the Supersix. The Supersix is for the racer, the Synapse is for the guy who wants to ride fast but still enjoy himself, and isn't so much concerned with eeking out the ultimate in aerodynamic speed.

Be wary of fit. If you can't take the thing for a spin because the guy is far away, then get a definite year and model from the guy, ask him if there are any changes from the base model, and then google "cannondale bike archive" to get the catalogs from Cannondales previous years, and check it out. You'll want to get a look at geometry to make sure it'll fit you. For example, a Specialized Roubaix 56cm is my size (but a bit smaller than perfect) and a Synapse 54cm is almost too big for me

Jamis is a solid bike. Take a ride on it, if it makes you smile and is in good shape, $500 is an ok price to pay for a used bike, although I think it was $700 new. Is that a weird angle picture, or is this a bike for a guy who is about 6'4?

That stack height on the Jamis is redic! You would have to be about 6'8+ to fit that bike and then you would be totally upright.

haven't been riding the mountain bike much at all. Can't deny the unbelievable convenience of jumping on the road bike and already riding the second I leave the front door. Going to shoot for a strong 40 miler today. We shall see how that goes.

Earlier in the week I bought some DT Swiss RWS skewers and a pair of Schwalbe Pro One tires in 28c, so I'll definitely be bolting all that crap to my new wheels over the weekend and putting them on my commuter bike for a shakedown ride or two.
