I really just lift because it’s something I’ve found that I’m good at, I enjoy doing things I excel at so it gives me something to look forward to rather than just grinding through a week of work or other routine chit I’d enjoy much less.

When it comes to other people in the gym, their insecurities or the reason they’re in the gym, it’s all irrelevant. Don’t care. I like to be in the gym and use that time for me and no one else, it’s certainly a selfish pleasure.

agreed

I do believe most of the people lifting seriously have some sort of mental abnormality or problem driving them. For me I began lifting so I could look good (purely for vain, narcisstic purposes) and get girls.

Now I train in the gym frequently but it's for myself. I like seeing those tiny changes in the mirror and feeling the pump and all that other **** associated with going to the gym. I would argue that I do spend way too much time centered around this though especially the past year.

For the past few weeks I've been trying to make my life less centered around the gym and focusing more on what matters in life: family, being social, and making memories in life.

I took it way too seriously last year and ended up sacrificing a lot of things and the outcome was great - but was it worth it? Probably not. I want to step away from being so obsessed and centered around the "fitness lifestyle" and just have fun and relax in life. I'm not gonna ease up on training - when the clock hits 8 and its time to go to the gym I'll bust my ass off for the 1-2 hours I'm there. The rest of the time? Gotta spend time with family while they're still there man. **** declining invitations to go eat out because of a "diet" or whatever.

Chances are I'm not gonna turn into an IFBB Pro. I'm gonna fukin go out and enjoy my time. I think a lot of beginners fall into that issue of neglecting everything else and surrounding themselves with only fitness related stuff which turns into a mistake IMO.

Does the body dysmorphia start because of lifting or does the lifting start because of body dysmorphia?

THE goons who care the most about this type of chit, aka make leg day memes, talk about the body dysmorphia, etc. look like chit anyways. They have this elitist mentality over regular gym goers when they dont realize that they also look like dog chit.

Mindblown

I would say my body dysmorphia really got out of hand the moment I started lifting srs

Do you guys remember the days before lifting? You probably would look in the mirror and either go: "Huh, I look kind of fat. I should eat less rice" or "Damn I'm skinny, more pushups" and that'd be the end of that. You probably ate whatever the fuk you wanted, still went out and nothing really mattered that much. Now you go through bulks and cuts and all that BS to try to achieve that optimal look

BRB now you gain slight water on love handles

"Fuk I gotta reduce my carbs by 50g and lower fats in half, up my protein!!111"

Brb slightly lose 6 pack

"Fuk gotta hop on PSMF to get shredded!!111"

Hate to say it but you're kinda right.

I'm not super strict on everything, but I work out hard 4-5 days a week and I don't have any luck with females at all. Sometimes I think I should just let myself go and just become a bearded slob who watches nexflix shows and Star Wars/Harry Potter/GOT/etc so I can have something in common with others.

starts as self confidence issues, 6 month grace period when you start and think you're the hottest chit that's ever existed, after that the never ending feeling of "i'm fat" "i'm small" "i'm weak" sets in and then it's game over.

The longer you lift the more likely you are to have friends that lift and when you're surrounded by people in that lifestyle your perception of "big" "strong" "lean" "aesthetic" becomes incredibly skewed.

I think that's a minority actually. In addition to casual, out of shape gym-goers who show up to the gym once a month there's a good number of people who are in semi-decent shape, train consistently, but aren't particularly strong/athletic/aesthetic.That's how I was in college--got in a pretty good shape via noob-ish gains during the first year and spent next 3 years progressing at a very very slow pace in terms of strength & physique. I'd work out roughly 5 hrs a week and wouldn't think much about my the way I look outside of those hours.

What I've noticed about a lot of people who took up bodybuilding very seriously is not so much the insecurity, but the fact they didn't have much else going on in their lives. BB is really good at giving ppl a strong sense of purpose which is crucial for overall happiness.

I'll be the first one to admit I have vices. Started for vain reasons, continue to do it for vain reasons.

If I walk into a room, I want for damn sure to be the best looking and most aesthetic all around guy there. When it was football, I wanted to find the baddest guy there and lay him flat. With swimming? I wanted to challenge our #1 guy and beat him. For me its all about being a step ahead or one level higher than the next guy no matter what the endeavor is; this in turn makes me more humble for some strange reason. Why? Couldn't really tell you. Probably some childhood thing or some chit lmao

I think most people are referencing going to extremes for lifting.

Technically if you look at any hobby, you can pin it down to some mental disorder or something from childhood that influences you to do that. It's a depressing way to look at life though. Sometimes it's better to be ignorant about things.

My body dysmorphia went crazy like most people the second I started lifting. I think it does for most people. Ill be at the gym and always be strict with myself and Ill feel like I am getting nowhere. THe sad thing is I absolutely shattered my original goals. It's a neverending cycle...hitting a goal and figuring out it's not what you expected, hitting another and still not feeling the way you thought you would.

The funny thing is when Ill hang out with a group of people ill always get comments about my body about how I obviously lift.
