Golden State killer finally caught decades after his crimes thanks to ancestry DNA

DeAngelo is accused of 45 rapes and 15 murders.

Sacramento County District Attorney's officials confirmed the reports and told ABC7 News that their investigation is ongoing and they will not be giving further information on the DNA at this time.

Ancestry websites 23andMe and Ancestry.com released statements on the findings, saying mainly that they do not know if their services aided in the arrest of DeAngelo.

Here is the full statement from 23andMe: We have not received inquiries regarding this case. Broadly speaking it's our policy to resist any law enforcement inquiries with all legal and practical means at our disposal. We have had a handful of inquiries over the years, and have never given customer information to law enforcement officials.

We don't know how California police identified this person, but it wasn't through our database. We didn't work with law enforcement on this case, they didn't contact us.

Here is the full statement from Ancestry.com: Ancestry advocates for its members' privacy and will not share any information with law enforcement unless compelled to by valid legal process, such as a court order or search warrant. Additionally, we publish law enforcement requests in our transparency report annually. It's important to note that in all of 2015, 2016, and 2017 we received no valid legal requests for genetic information.

At this point, DeAngelo has only been charged for two counts of murder for the death of a Sacramento area couple in 1978, but police promise more charges.

idk about the 23andme stuff, but here's some more details. They basically gather puzzle pieces and create a profile, and eventually there's enough overlap to attribute to him, I guess.

rip genealogy websites

anyone with some sense would think twice before volunteering their dna for a national database.. even having a family member that uses it could connect your dna to you

if they previously found dna and couldnt match it in their database, it was basically used as a confirmation tool, not a deductive one.

now if they find your dna they can run it against these genealogy sites and trace your dna to a family member... no thx

unless i'm unaware of some recent legislation i'm pretty sure its illegal as **** for law enforcement to use genetic testing websites like that
no way they would make such a high profile arrest on 100% inadmissible evidence

You sign away the rights to your DNA to a private business, it's a normal business not a doctors office so it is admissible.

but if 23andme/ancestry are telling the truth law enforcement never got a warrant to use their data
it sounds like they just sent in a DNA sample and used the DNA Relatives tool to find his daughter

Why would he suddenly stop killing and raping in 1986? Don't sickos like this just continue indefinitely until they get caught or die?

Don’t know details but everyone is assuming police accessed info regarding his DNA. I’m having trouble thinking about how he was connected through a family tree etc without analyzing DNA though.

THEN he was caught and compared to a previous sample.

Can anyone think of ways a family tree could be connected to him? Maybe his rape victim had a baby, and the kid matched to a family member of his and wondered why?...

Edit: the more I think about it, a cop could send a fake profile in with his DNA and see who matches. Is that illegal? They aren’t accessing the database the same way you would expect.

And before you ask, he didn’t kill all the victims. Haven’t read anything about babies though.
And if DeAngelo is the killer — police say his DNA proves that he is — then he fit these 45 suspected rapes and 12 suspected murders into an astonishing double life. He was a Vietnam War veteran before the spree, a police officer during the spree, and then a husband, father and grandfather who lived quietly among the same communities that the Golden State Killer had terrorized.

Double edit: if any of his kin were arrested and entered into the California DNA database, they would match then it could lead to him.

Triple edit: even if they didn’t know of any impregnated victims initially, he may have raped (and impregnated) more that never came forward. At which point they do the DNA test, match and then come forward.

This article says the police started monitoring him and collected his DNA from items he discarded at his home. They haven't given details on how DNA from 2 cold cases led to him.

His patience, reconnaissance and ability to escape manhunts, as well as the intricate knots he used to bind victims, led detectives to believe he had served in the military or in law enforcement. Mr. DeAngelo did both.

Police should submit DNA upon hiring (or previous to). Maybe they do now.
