My broscience theory is that it’s the open mouth expression is the IRL equivalent of overly using emojis or “lol haha” in texts. People who use too many emojis or have to say “lol haha” all the time tend to be girls and maintaining social harmony is generally a more feminine trait. You throw in a :P or a “haha” to alleviate any tension because you care about how you come across and you don’t want the other person to think you’re cold or mean.

Soyboys probably don’t want to mean mug or have a plain expression (the same kind that you see in every pic of male sex symbols) because they don’t want to come across as mean or douchey. At the same time, they’re probably not confident with smiling normally. So they do the open mouth face as if to convey “Hey, I’m a chill guy, I’m having a good time and I don’t take myself too seriously!”

As someone who used to make this face a lot when they were younger, I can explain it pretty simply. It's a self-esteem thing with having your picture taken. I hate having my picture taken, I'm not photogenic at all. As such, I'd use this 'goofy' face as an attempt to negate my lack of a photogenic face. The idea being that it preemptively stops people from mocking how you look in pictures because it gives you the excuse of 'Oh I obviously was just making a stupid face for the camera, that why I look bad'.


The idea behind a posed photo is that you're trying to make yourself look as good as you can for a split moment, so that it captures your 'best self'. If you look like chit whenever you attempt this, it gives off the impression that you're ugly.

Its the same as when someone actually attempts to sing seriously and they sound like chit in comparison with someone kind of 'mock singing' and still sounding like chit. The guy who was being serious gets mocked because 'lol you're so phucking bad bro' whereas the guy who preemptively sets a 'oh i'm only joking around' vibe and sings in a goofy way doesn't get mocked even though he might genuinely be trying his best because he has the ability to deny that he was trying to sound good
